Thugs racially abuse and pull knife on taxi driverPolice are hunting thugs who racially abused a taxi driver before threatening him with a knife and assaulting him.
The 45-year-old driver was attacked shortly after he picked up the three men and a woman in Leicester city centre.
One of them racially abused him before he was threatened with a knife.
One of the men then got out of the cab and walked to the driver’s door and reached inside and pulled the keys out of the ignition. He then punched the driver in the face.
The men then pulled the driver out of the car and tried to assault him again.
However, he managed to run away and alert police. The attackers ran away before officers arrived at the scene.
The attack happened after the driver picked up the passengers in Church Gate, Leicester city centre shortly before 3am on Sunday, February 2.
Police released details today and appealed for witnesses.
Pc Nick Golden said: “This was a despicable crime against a man who was going about his daily business and trying to earn a living.
“No one should be subjected to an attack of this nature, especially in their place of work.
“We need to catch those responsible and would urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has heard rumours about who may be responsible to contact us.
“It’s believed the suspects came from the direction of the Clock Tower and were with a woman and another man who have also been described as being in their mid 20s.
“If you recall any aspect of the incident then please contact us. Any calls received will be treated in confidence.”
All the passengers are white and the main suspect is thought to be 20 to 25 and has short brown hair and was clean-shaven, about 5’ tall and of slim build, he was wearing a long sleeved cream top.
The second man who tried to assault the driver outside the car is 25 or 26, 6ft, slim and has short brown hair which was brushed forward. He was unshaven and was wearing a black jacket.
