Taxi driver removed from school route, after parent reports them for allegedly smoking in cab

A TAXI driver has been temporarily removed from school duty while allegations the person was smoking while transporting children are investigated.

Scott Phillips, of Sandfields, Port Talbot, said he first noticed the smell of smoke in the car when he put his daughter in it to go to Catwg Primary two weeks ago.

"I always take her out to the taxi in the mornings, and this particular day I noticed a really strong smell of smoke," said Mr Phillips.

"It was as if someone had just put a cigarette out.

"Well the next time I took her out, the smell of smoke was in there again.

"I pulled the driver aside and said, just to let you know, I will be making a formal complaint about it, because you should not be smoking in a taxi which transports kids, it’s not right."

Mr Phillips said he made a complaint in writing to the department of transport at Neath Port Talbot Council.

But the following day, his daughter — seven-year-old Shannon — returned from school to tell him that while the driver was stuck in traffic, they had pulled out a cigarette and lit it with her and three other children in the car.

"I called the department of transport and told then I didn’t want that driver taking my daughter to school anymore," said an angry Mr Phillips.

He said the driver had been removed, but he felt that there should be greater punishment.

A spokesman for Neath Port Talbot council confirmed they were investigating the alleged incident.

"The operator has been requested to temporarily remove the current driver from this service," he said.

"An alternative driver has been allocated by the operator until the investigation is completed."

The law on smoking in taxis

TAXIS are considered a place of work under the law, and come under the smoking at work legislation.

In the UK, smoking is not allowed in any enclosed workplace, public building or on public transport. Businesses must make sure nobody smokes in shared vehicles and must display no smoking signs. Any business which fails to do so can be fined thousands if they don’t stop people smoking at work or don’t display signs.

The fella has lost money not doing the run, what more do they want to do with him?

Maybe cut off a limb or two? :?

He has only been removed from the school run. He could have made up the lost money by doing other work for the company. I think he will lose money soon when he gets the fine from the court and also when the Council take his badge away.

I would say two! Usually the two fingers that normally hold his cigarette - without those he would probably keep on dropping it
