Belfast taxi firm owner fined £500 for using unlicensed cars and driversA Belfast taxi depot owner has been fined £500 after pleading guilty to providing unlicensed taxis and drivers.
Edward Wilson Vaughan of Ballycairn Drive, Belfast, who owns Belvoir Taxis, had originally denied involvement in two incidents.
Yesterday he pleaded guilty as he appeared in front of Belfast Magistrates Court. Mr Vaughan received a total of 12 penalty points and was ordered to pay costs of £28 and an offenders levy of £15.
He was fined £100 for each of two counts of providing an unlicensed vehicle and driver and was fined £100 plus six penalty points for each of two counts of having no insurance and £100 on one count of failing to produce documents for inspection.
On June 29, 2013, a Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) Enforcement Officer phoned Belvoir Taxis and ordered a taxi from the Old Milltown Road in Belfast.
A taxi was immediately dispatched by the depot and used to take the officer to his destination.
When follow up checks were carried out it was revealed that both the vehicle provided and the driver were not licensed.
On August 3 a DVA Enforcement Officer phoned Belvoir Taxis and ordered a taxi from Old Milltown Road in Belfast, a taxi was immediately dispatched by the depot and was used to take the officer to his destination.
It was immediately apparent to the officer that the vehicle and driver were unlicensed and the vehicle was detained at the scene where the driver was formally interviewed.
Mr Vaughan was formally interviewed on October 17, 2013, but denied any involvement in both incidents.
A DOE spokeswoman said: "The Driver & Vehicle Agency has a responsibility to ensure operators meet their requirements and will take the necessary enforcement action where required."
