Cambridge taxi driver claims he has "no end of trouble" with drunk students vomiting and not paying fares

A taxi driver claims he has had “no end of trouble” with Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) students running off without paying fares and vomiting in his cab.

Nelson Rodriges, who works for Panther taxis in Cambridge, told the News that a lot of taxi drivers have had issues with ARU students on nights out.

But for Mr Rodriges the last straw came three weeks ago when a drunk student was sick in his car, refused to pay the fine and threatened to beat him up.

Mr Rodriges, 36, from Cherry Hinton, said: “This is my living. I don’t think it is fair that they get away with it.”

The most recent run-in occurred in the early hours of Thursday night.

Mr Rodriges said he picked up four individuals from the town rank at around 3.30am and dropped them on Broad Street, off East Road, where they opened the door and ran off.

The group were said to have then entered the entrance to the university on East Road with a card key.

He added: “The fare was only £6.20, but the attitude and behaviour is priceless. If they can get away with it once then they might do it again.
We are just left to pick up the pieces.”

Mr Rodriges reported both incidents to the police and he has issued a complaint with ARU.

He said that most of the mishaps occur near the university, on East Road at Brunswick House, Newmarket Road, and in the CB1 area.

The News has asked Anglia Ruskin University to comment.

If they are clearly drunk, why pick them up!

If it's a long term problem then get a long term solution.

I.e. CCTV.
