Taxi driver left with £5,000 bill after drunk danced on cab roof in Middlesbrough town centre A man was given a police caution for criminal damage after he 'danced for about five minutes' on to the roof of Alias Hussain's taxi A taxi driver faces a £5,000 repair bill after a drunken man danced on his car’s roof as he tried to drive a couple home. Alias Hussain was driving down Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough when a man stepped in front of his car. “I had to stop or I would have hit him,” said Alias, from Linthorpe in Middlesbrough. When the 47-year-old stopped his Hackney Carriage taxi, the man climbed on to the bonnet, walking across the windscreen and on to the roof where he “danced for about five minutes”. With photographic evidence of the reveller standing on top of the roof, waving his arms in the air, the police were able to track him down. The roof received several dents and the radiator grille was damaged in the incident which occurred at 2am on Sunday, February 2, on Linthorpe Road near the old Barclays Bank building. Alias, who is married to Fazia and has two grown-up children Rizuan, 27, and Samir, 23, was shocked when he received the mechanic’s bill for repairs. “I had expected it to be around £1,000 but it all adds up,” he said, showing the bill, detailing work which adds up to £5,007.86. “I bought it last year when it was three years old and I look after it. “Claiming on insurance would affect my no claims bonus. “The police have said I have got to go through the small claims court.” Fellow taxi driver, Rasub Afzal, said: “He was just given a caution. “Why should the driver have to pay £5,000 to pay for the damage? “He should have got more than a caution. “If a taxi driver danced on the roof of a police vehicle would he get more than a caution? “This is what happens to taxi drivers all the time.” A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police confirmed a 29-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident and given a police caution for criminal damage. source: http://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teess ... ll-6831254 |

This should have gone to court and the driver would have been made to pay for the damage. The police wanted to take the easy way out, and they should be ashamed of themselves. The driver needs to complain to the Police Complaints people, as the least the police could have done was issue a conditional caution i.e. a caution that will revert to court action if he doesn't pay for the damage. |
