Dundee taxi chief suggests rickshaw plan is a non-starter

A taxi trade unionist has hit back at a plan to develop a rickshaw business in Dundee.

Chris Elder, Unite Union taxi branch secretary, has said he has “serious concerns” about the plan.

Entrepreneur Adam Gierak has proposed to introduce the bike-based mode of transport, arguing that it will provide customers with a safe and environmentally friendly way of getting round the city.

However, Mr Elder said: “I have serious concerns regarding the public safety of this proposal.

“Who will test these contraptions to see if they are fit for the road? Will the rickshaw operators have public liability insurance? Will they sit a street knowledge test?

“The proposals claim that the rickshaws only do five miles an hour and that there are no emissions so it would benefit the city. Are the council going to put cycle lanes all over the city centre to deal with these rickshaws? If not they will cause more pollution in the city with buses and taxis piled up behind them.

“There is not enough taxi rank space as it is — where are these rickshaws going to sit?”

Councillors will vote on Mr Gierak’s idea at the licensing committee on Thursday, but Mr Elder also believes that he is applying for the wrong sort of licence.

“I understand that the rickshaw operator is applying for a street traders’ licence,” Mr Elder said. “If he is picking up passengers for hire and reward he would need a hackney licence and, as the city has capped hackney licences, he would need a private hire licence and would need to be pre-booked,” he added.

Mr Gierak, who is from Poland, plans on starting out with two rickshaws — one ridden by himself and another by a second driver. His rickshaws would go by the name Scottish Eco-taxis, and he says they will offer three types of trip.

shows how much a joke Dundee is becoming when your council have to vote on this kind of thing it should have been throwing out the window and not even taken into consideration what kind of council does Dundee have because they are doing nothing right what they should be doing is looking on how to get the Dundee public back working.

I agree with you there jim, dundee badly needs a lot of decent paying jobs, all the well off here are either solicitors/doctors or they have a job outside Dundee,i cant see the council allowing the rickshaws,as you know the main tourist attractions are all down at the waterfront,to get to them you have to use the new ringroad setup, this is like a ratrace from 8.00am to 6.00 pm ,a 5mph rickshaw would create mayhem here and be potentially dangerous given the amount of fast and impatient drivers, the whole waterfront is only a 5 min from the bus/train stations walk anyway

I hate to burst your bubble girls, but rickshaws are not that uncommon in cities around the country. Oh and safety is relative. I doubt there is any serious research suggesting that rickshaws are more dangerous than taxis.

As far as rickshaws go, they are legitimate business exercise. #-o

skull in not doubting the safety of rickshaws I am however doubting the safety regarding a 5 mph vehicle travelling along the main arterial route through a city, there is no other route into the waterfront, the other tourist attraction which im asked about is the law hill which is a extinct volcano, there is a steep climb to here which I doubt he could achieve although I might have to put him to the test, gimmicks don't last long in Dundee remember the brand new mercs giving the Dundee public the service they deserve ?now replaced with rattling Peugeot premiers and clapped out skodas ,Dundee is not a big tourist city,i was over in st Andrews recently and every second person had a camera ,in Dundee you never see this, the waterfront area is meant to change this, but as I said it is only a 5 min walk from both stations, a taxi could take longer because of the traffic lights/congestion,a rickshaw would take even longer,i admire the guy for trying something different but this in Dundee at least is a no brainer

If your council gives them the green light, I think you will find them hanging around the pubs and clubs and staying pretty close to the city centre. I wouldn't worry too much about rickshaws. Your trade is so [edited by admin] up, That's the least of your troubles.

Dundee taxi trade is the same as elsewhere, its the economy that's effecting us,thankfully the council brought in a rule a couple of years ago stating no tax reference number no badge and more crucially no plate,a large number of hired plates went bye bye, there is also a newly imposed limit on hack numbers which is slowly having an effect,as for the nightclubs again all are centralised and its common for cabbies to refuse a fare from one to the other, the pub business would be useless as this is mostly out to the housing schemes which would take 45 mins and he would be lucky if he still had his rickshaw on the way out , the only business I can think of is screaming hen partys going from a centre pub to the centre nightclub,if a group of 8 phone him and he gets 2 in the rickshaw what are the chances of the remaining 6 still waiting ?so he gets one trip at a cost of maybe £2,as this is for hire or reward and not a taxi/ph im sure it will confuse our intellectually limited masters

Just imagine what would be left if he went to Whitefield, bloody hell when you go through there you drive as fast as you can due to the kids being able to remove your wheels if you go below 40 mph,
