FIFA World Cup Licensing Hours Order Issued


The draft order extending the licensing hours for England’s world cup games has been published. Subject to Parliamentary approval, the Order will come into effect on 12 June 2014.


The order will permitted extended licensing hours:


- From at 11pm on 14th June 2014 and ending at 1am on 15th June 2014;


- The period of four hours beginning at 8pm on 19th June 2014;


- The period of four hours beginning at 9pm on 28th June 2014 (provided that the Men’s Senior England Football Team play in the tournament match);


- The period of four hours beginning at 9pm on 29th June 2014 (provided that the Men’s Senior England Football Team play in the tournament match);


- The period of four hours beginning at 9pm on 4th July 2014 (provided that the Men’s Senior England Football Team play in the tournament match);


- The period of four hours beginning at 9pm on 5th July 2014 (provided that the Men’s Senior England Football Team play in the tournament match);


- The period of four hours beginning at 9pm on 8th July 2014 (provided that the Men’s Senior England Football Team play in the tournament match);


- The period of four hours beginning at 9pm on 9th July 2014 (provided that the Men’s Senior England Football Team play in the tournament match);


- The period of four hours beginning at 9pm on 12th July 2014 (provided that the Men’s Senior England Football Team play in the tournament match); and


- The period of four hours beginning at 8pm on 13th July 2014 (provided that the Men’s Senior England Football Team play in the tournament match).


The permitted extension only applies to Premises Licences and Club Premises Certificates with on sales and where the premises’ opening hours immediately precede or continue into the specified times (above).


The Order cannot be used by premises licensed for off sales or to extend licensable hours for regulated entertainment. It can however be used to extend the hours for the provision of late night refreshment if its provision is in conjunction with the sale by retail of alcohol for consumption on the premises.

I thought that pubs and clubs could apply for 24 hour licenses now if they want to. However the economics of such opening hours in most parts of the country would not make such a move viable. In my town some pubs stay open to 02.00 on Fridays and Saturdays and the nightclub stays open until 04.00.
