City taxi driver did not leave good impression

11:00am Tuesday 8th April 2014 in Letters
Oxford Mail: Taxi driver left a bad impression on a visitor Taxi driver left a bad impression on a visitor

ON arriving back in Oxford after a very long-haul flight at 9pm, my husband and I (both in our 80s) took a taxi from the central coach station.

The driver barely acknowledged our presence and was not familiar with our destination, only one mile away. Reaching our destination under our instruction he waited in his cab for the fare. At no time did he attempt to help us with our three suitcases and left without a word.

I ask how can the city award a licence to drive a taxi, to such a person? I am most concerned that visitors to the UK and Oxford will be left with a very bad impression if this sort of treatment is given.

So let me get this right, not one but two octogenarians, hire your taxi, and you would wait for them to ask, before assisting them with their luggage? #-o #-o #-o #-o #-o #-o #-o

I would assist regardless, sometimes you can't be sure and the customer takes offence if you offer help, even if they have a dog with them.

I'm just saying if it's that much of an issue to them, they should have asked rather than whinge about it in the papers, that's if it happened how they describe it.

My thoughts are that he was not a licensed driver - just someone in a licensed cab!

My thoughts are the driver had the hump with the short job.

But IMO the driver was also a tad thick, as he hasn't worked out the quicker you get them out of the cab the quicker it is you can get to the next punter.

my thoughts were that he was just a sh*t cab driver

but I was kinda thinking what Cabby John said was right - there are taxi drivers and people who drive taxis - there's a difference.
