RICKSHAWS SET FOR GREEN LIGHT AS TAXI SERVICE Rickshaws are expected to get the go-ahead to serve as taxis in Nottingham. A city-council committee is set to decide the issue on Monday. As previously reported in the Post, businessman Sanjay Sharma has set up a rickshaw importing business. He wants to introduce either a taxi service or a special women-only service to get around the city safely. The £4,000 three-wheelers have a top speed of 35mph and do 60mpg. Rickshaws throng the streets of every city in India, Pakistan and Indonesia. They are also a common sight in London's West End, Edinburgh and Oxford. This is the first time they would ply for passengers here, although advertisers have used them before. "You couldn't go to Mansfield in one, but for distances up to five miles it's no problem," said Mr Sharma. Entrepreneur Lee Todd has also approached the city council for a taxi licence, but he wants to run a fleet of pedal-powered rickshaws around the city centre. "It's economical and it's environmentally friendly," said Mr Todd, who got the idea after seeing a fleet of pedal rickshaws in Edinburgh. "In three years they went from ten rickshaws to over 20. I think we could have the same kind of success here. "A lot of streets around the Old Market Square could become pedestrianised and the pedal rickshaws can be used there." Mr Todd hopes to start with a fleet of ten, bought from a company in Bath. Coun Derek Cresswell chairs the committee which is looking at the two rickshaw applications. He said he would have to see what was presented, but added: "If it's workable I'm tempted to say good luck to them." |

Yet more inaccuraces from the press mixing up PEDI -CABS and Motorised Tuk-Tuks of which there are approxiamately NIL in Londons west end. |
