Self-employed builders, taxi drivers and hairdressers to lose £1K a year due to benefit cuts

Self-employed workers could be up to £1,000 out of pocket due to Tory cuts.

Hairdressers, builders, plumbers and taxi drivers are just some of the workers who may lose out as Universal Credit comes in.

Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, Owen Smith, said ‘it beggars belief’ that 800,000 low-paid, self-employed workers will be impacted.

He said: ‘It beggars belief the Tories are slashing support for low-paid, self-employed workers by nearly a billion pounds a year, more than £1,000 each.

‘If Universal Credit was in chaos before Iain Duncan Smith left the Government, it’s now in meltdown.

‘The very people it was meant to help – workers struggling to make ends meet, some earning even less than the minimum wage, will be hit the hardest.

‘Labour is demanding the new Secretary of State perform his second U-turn in as many weeks.

‘This time, on Tory cuts to Universal Credit that will act as a work penalty for the self-employed and cost two million families £1,600 a year.’

An estimated 770,000 self-employed workers currently rely on tax credits.

It beggars belief that 800,000 self-employed people need tax credits.

Maybe they should be asking themselves why they sell themselves so cheap.

One lad round here had a letter from the Tax Office wanting to know his real earnings, he's a bit miffed because he's got a new Taxi on HP, a 4X4, new Caravan plus his missus doesn't work. He claims WTC and puts down he only works 30 hours a week.

It's good that he's both thrifty with his cash as well the facts.

He didn't like it when I told him that the HMRC have full access to Credit Files, DVLA files and bank accounts. His face dropped a mile.

You have hit nail on head.

I'm often amazed at exactly how much financial info can be found on someone who is trying to hide their income/expenditure.

The authorities have access to everything with your name on. Absolutely everything.

So someone sells themselves short and everyone else pays.

In your manor Delta drivers work for peanuts, that keeps the rates down for everyone else in the trade, and the taxpayer picks up the bill.

All the time the owners of the firms live a life of luxury.
