Popular Hartlepool taxi boss passes away A popular and well-known Hartlepool taxi boss has died. Ray Tweddle, affectionately known to many as Twed, who previously owned Streamline Taxis passed away early on Saturday morning. In 2013, Ray spent seven months in hospital after being suddenly struck down by Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare viral condition which left him temporarily paralysed and unable to walk. While in hospital, he married his partner Julie who had been the love of his life for almost 10 years after proposing in intensive care. Streamline colleagues later completed a sponsored walk from Peterlee to their Hartlepool base for ward 26 at James Cook Hospital with Ray joining in the final few hundred yards in his wheelchair. They raised over £1,000. Read more: http://www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/news/po ... z45VvlHTeF |

Hartlepool taxi boss Ray will be given a send-off to remember Former Hartlepool taxi boss Ray Tweddle is due to get a send-off to remember on his final journey next week. A fleet of cabs are due to follow the funeral cortege from Ray’s home at Hartfields to All Saints’ Church on Wednesday. The hearse will also go past the offices of Streamline Taxis, the firm that Ray started more than 40 years ago, in Tower Street on the way to the church. The service will take place at 2pm and Ray’s wife Julie said it will be a celebration of his life with lots of funny stories sure to be told. Julie said: “He always used to say ‘I don’t do mornings’, so it is on the afternoon. “Everybody loved him.” The family is asking people who attend to wear something yellow in a nod to his yellow taxis. Town taxi driver Stephen Picton, who worked for Ray a number of times, said: “He was the kingpin of the yellow taxis. “I think the police might have to close off the roads because there will be that many yellow taxis. “His favourite saying was ‘it’s not worth a tab end’. He didn’t see it as a job, he saw it as a hobby.” Ray, who previously lived at the Fens, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday at home with Julie and daughter Lindsey after suffering ill health for some time. Streamline grew from just one cab to 130 under Ray’s control. He also leaves sister Linda, stepdaughter Jane, brother-in-law Tony and grandchildren Katie and Taylor-Ray. Hartlepool taxi boss’s licence number will be retired Council officials have paid a unique tribute to a popular town taxi boss following his death. Bosses at Hartlepool Borough Council have decided to “retire” Ray Tweddle’s licence number so that it cannot be used again in the future. Ian Harrison, the council’s trading standards and licensing manager, said: “A number of years ago we granted a request from Ray that his taxi badge number be changed to 2222 so that it reflected the telephone number of his beloved Streamline Taxis – 222222. “This is the first time the council has taken a decision to “retire” a particular licence number, and we believe it is the most fitting way to recognise Ray’s special status in the history of the town’s taxi trade. “We hope he would be happy to know that his number – which represents so much of what he worked for in his life – is to be set aside and kept special just for him and his family.” Ray was a long-standing member of the town’s Taxi Owners Working Group, which meets quarterly with council officials to discuss ways of developing the taxi trade and to resolve any issues that might arise. Mr Harrison added: “His valued input at these meetings contributed greatly to the ongoing development of the town’s taxi trade, directly benefiting residents of the town. “Ray was a great character and was well known in taxi circles, not just in Hartlepool but right across the North East. “If he wasn’t working with taxis, he was talking about taxis – and as a licensing team we always enjoyed working with him.” A fleet of cabs are due to follow the funeral cortege from Ray’s home at Hartfields to All Saints’ Church ahead of his funeral tomorrow. The hearse will also go past the offices of Streamline Taxis, the firm that Ray started more than 40 years ago, in Tower Street. The service will take place at 2pm and people are being asked to wear something yellow in a nod to his yellow taxis. Ray died peacefully in his sleep earlier this month.
