Tunbridge Wells minicab driver conned in Eastenders scam

Eastenders stars Barbara Windsor and Samantha Womack were used in an elaborate ploy leaving a Tunbridge Wells cabbie £720 out of pocket.

Despite 13 years' experience, Ian Dolwin was conned into driving 240 miles around the country and scammed out of the cash.

Mr Dolwin, 47, of Chenies Close, specialises in long haul trips.

However, last Friday, a call to Airport Car Services – which he owns – sent him on the costly wild goose chase.

"I was driving some customers from Tunbridge Wells to Heathrow Airport that day when I received a phone call from someone called 'David' from a hotel called 'Travel Lodge' in Tonbridge," he said.

"I was asked whether I would be able to 'do two pick-ups' as soon as possible, one from Coventry, and the other from Milton Keynes, then back to Tonbridge."

Mr Dolwin dropped off his passengers at Heathrow and then was told he would be picking up the soap stars, who play Peggy Mitchell and Ronnie Mitchell.

He was told by 'David' that at around 4pm he would need to pick up some parcels from the BBC offices in Coventry before they closed, and was asked to pay £720 for them, with a promise of a £50 tip.

"I did go to Coventry and meet this person. He was white with brown hair and casually dressed. He seemed a little stressed," Mr Dolwin said.

"I did not have enough cash so had to get the rest from a conveniently-placed cashpoint."

Mr Dolwin was assured the money would be returned as it was for the BBC and continued to Milton Keynes.

"I called 'David' as planned and was told the celebrities would not be ready for another half an hour so waited outside the hotel," he said.

"I was then told my 'customers' had "got into the wrong taxi" and was asked to meet "that taxi" at a service station on the M25, but no one was there to be met."

It was then the penny dropped and Mr Dolwin realised he had been conned.

Mr Dolwin immediately reported the incident to the police.

Kent Police said: "The victim in this case has been advised to report the incident to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

Mr Colwin said he was going public to ensure other drivers were not taken in by the ruse.

"It was clearly orchestrated to extract money from me," he said.

"I have never had anything like this before. We (drivers) are nice to customers and want to do what we are told.

"A lot of drivers are nice and trusting."

Mr Dolwin added he did not want the incident to "erode the trust between drivers and costumers because drivers really need that."

We often get calls to pick up a take-a-way from town and take it to an address. They want us to pay for the take-a-way and get paid on delivery. We wont do it, why? All the take-a-ways do free delivery so why would someone pay us for delivery?

One of our drivers is actually licensed to deliver booze and fags. He can't deliver in the taxi but he has a van for this.
