Uber in Newcastle sees driver numbers increase from handful to more than 300

Minicab app firm says after successful first year in Newcastle its ambition is to offer a full-service in other parts of the region

Minicab firm Uber is hailing a successful first year in Newcastle after its driver numbers increased from just a handful to more than 300.

It has now set its sights on expanding throughout the North East

Uber customers use a mobile app to order and pay for private hire taxis without needing cash. From Newcastle, it takes passengers as far out as Hexham, Sunderland and Durham.

It is possible to use Uber in Sunderland and Durham, but the firm does not yet have a full presence in either city and can only offer a limited service.

Full expansion would help it increase its presence in the likes of Sunderland and Durham, and allow it to serve a bigger area.

When asked if there are any plans to roll its service out to other parts of the region, a spokesman said: “It’s our ambition to launch in other cities in the North East.”

Uber offers three types of cab in Newcastle. UberX is the cheapest, the premium UberExec offers rides in high-end vehicles and while UberXL drivers use larger cars. It uses “surge pricing” to increase the cost of a ride when demand is high.

Uber says it has enjoyed “huge growth” since launching in Newcastle. It now has a full-time operations team based in the city centre.

The average time it takes to order a cab and get in the car has fallen from over five minutes to under 3.5 minutes.

It estimates 10% of the city’s population have taken a ride in an Uber cab, while customers from 288 cities and 70 different countries have used Uber in Newcastle.

Uber’s general manager for the North East, Chris Yiu said: “It’s been a fantastic 12 months for Uber in Newcastle, during which we’ve launched three great Uber products in the city, and we’re looking forward to helping even more people get around town as we continue to grow throughout the North East.

“The real stars of the show are the hundreds of professional drivers that have chosen to partner with us over the last year - the future for Newcastle is bright and we’re proud to be part of it.”

This article self praising UBER is followed another day by a video of a UBER so called professional driver nearly causing a crash on one of the busiest exits in the city which then was followed by a video of a 3 vehicle smash which closed the same busy exit for 3 hours and the UBER vehicle being loaded onto a low loader.

Watch an Uber driver nearly cause a crash with sudden U-turn in Newcastle city centre

The taxi driver forces two others to slam on after pulling the dangerous manoeuvre on Mosley Street

This is the moment an Uber Taxi driver nearly causes a crash after performing a sudden U-turn in Newcastle city centre.

Dash-cam footage shows the brazen cabbie turn his car into oncoming traffic on Mosley Street, causing two motorists to slam on their breaks.

He then completes the turnaround and travels up Pilgrim Street.

But as anyone with local knowledge will tell you, the taxi driver could have just turned left onto Dean Street then made a safe U-turn at the mini roundabout.

On the night it was taken, visibility was low due to fog and there was heavy traffic in the city centre.

The motorist who captured the footage described slamming on his brakes to avoid a collision.

He said: “It was unbelievable, we were lucky there wasn’t an accident. I almost did not see him, the people carrier to my right was blocking him.

“The Uber driver just appeared in front of me and I just managed to break in time. It’s a good job I was only doing 20mph.

“It’s a reminder you need to pay attention and watch everything. You sometimes need eyes in the back of your head.”

must have been this one;

Driver remains in hospital following four-car crash in Newcastle city centre

The driver who was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary after the crash on Westgate Road on Thursday afternoon remains in hospital

A driver remains in hospital after a four-car crash in Newcastle city centre.

The accident happened on Westgate Road and Neville Street just before 4pm on Thursday.

Another person involved was treated for whiplash and it is thought this man was released from hospital on Thursday night.

Police, fire and ambulance crews attended the accident.

Roads were closed from the Swan House Roundabout, down Mosley Street, St Nicholas Street and then onto Westgate Road leaving city centre roads gridlocked.

Northumbria Police warned motorists to avoid the area, and were diverting traffic across the High Level Bridge, which is usually reserved solely for buses and taxis.

The road was re-opened at 5.25pm, an hour-and-a-half after police were first notified of the incident.

Police said investigations into the crash are ongoing.
