Police condemn 'appalling' taxis
Taxi drivers in Bedford have been condemned by the police for having vehicles that are not fit to be on the road.
Bedfordshire Police Roads Policing Unit carried out taxi checks for roadworthiness on Friday and said it turned out to be a "very sad day" .
Of the 30 private hire cabs pulled over, only four did not have any defects.
A total of 12 had defects of such a serious nature that they were immediately stopped from further use and taken off the road.
A further 13 had minor defects. Police say the most common serious problems proved to be defective tyres and brakes.
Richard Bratton, casualty reduction officer for Bedfordshire Police said some of the cars were in such a dangerous condition, they should never have been on the road.
He said: "What an appalling state of affairs. Here we are telling people not to drive, and to take a cab, only to find that they are in such a poor condition. There were very few that I would have been happy to use."
He added that to make matters worse, the taxi operators had been warned about the check two days beforehand, giving them ample time to have a look at their vehicles.
