SIX people have been reported following an operation which aimed to ensure that taxi and private hire vehicles are working in Glasgow legally.

Police Scotland cops joined forces with Taxi Enforcement Officers for the recent operation which was carried out over a weekend in Glasgow city centre.

They revealed that six people were reported to the Procurator Fiscal for alleged contraventions of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act.

A variety of alleged offences were uncovered throughout the operation.

One driver was issued with a fixed penalty notice for failing to comply with a traffic sign.

Another driver had taxi plates removed due to non-compliance with licensing conditions.

Glasgow city centre’s top cop Chief Inspector Brian Gibson said that the operation was an important one for his officers to carry out because people should be able to get into a taxi they know will be safe.

Chief Inspector Gibson said: “The aim of this operation was to ensure that taxis and private hire vehicles in Glasgow are legal, roadworthy and safe and to target those who are involved in illegally touting for business.

“It’s important that people know that when they get into a taxi they know they will be safe.”

He also praised the majority of taxi and private hire vehicles drivers who kept to the high standards required for them to operate in the city.

He said: “A number of people were spoken to and advised on very minor offences, however, we were reassured to find that the majority of vehicles were found to be in order and that drivers are adhering to the required standards and conditions of their licenses.

“The success of this action will result in similar partnership actions in the future.”

Police Scotland also issued advice to the public to remind them the difference between a taxi and private hire car in order to combat illegal touting.

The force said: “The main difference between taxis and private hire cars is that only taxis can be hailed from the street (there and then hires) or pick passengers up at licensed stances (ranks).”
