When a drunk woman was sick in the back of a Bristol taxi the driver tried to withdraw cash from her bank account for compensation.

Barkhad Mohamed picked up the fare in the early hours outside Lakota nightclub in March, Bristol Crown Court heard.

After his passenger vomited in his car he took her bank card and PIN and made several attempts to withdraw cash from her account – without success.

He was originally charged with then forcing the woman to do a sexual act in the car, but although a jury convicted him of fraud they failed to reach a verdict on the rape charge and a judge recorded a not guilty verdict.

Mohamed, 31, of Goodhind Street, St Jude's, who denied wrongdoing, declined to comment as he left court.

Giles Nelson, prosecuting, said Mohamed picked up the woman and, after she vomited in his cab, took her bank card, obtained her PIN and drove to a cash machine.

Mohamed appeared at Bristol Crown Court
Mr Nelson said: “There were several attempts to withdraw money from her account, in sums of £150, £100, £80, £50 and £30.

“All attempts were declined.

“The other allegation was committed and she was taken home.

“She was vulnerable and ill at the time.”

Sarah Regan, defending, told the judge Mohamed had had his taxi driver’s licence suspended and his family was living on benefits.

Judge James Patrick handed him a community order, involving 80 hours of unpaid work.

He told Mohamed: “You are a hard-working, intelligent man.

“I’m quite sure you will complete this order sensibly.

“I hope not to see you again.”

Mohamed was ordered to pay £300 court costs.
