Police investigating an unprovoked assault on a man who was punched to the head and repeatedly kicked believe a taxi driver or their passengers could help crack the case.

The assault happened near the railway line outside the Engine Shed on Brayford Wharf East about 3am on Thursday, May 11.

Ben Sherriff, 20, left the Engine Shed after an evening out with friends.

He walked in the opposite direction to his friends and on his own, as he passed over the railway lines, he felt a punch to his head.

Mr Sherriff fell onto the floor and was repeatedly kicked.

Police say he has suffered severe injuries and he faces a "long recovery period".

A police spokesman said: "We believe a taxi/private hire vehicle drove past as the assault was taking place.

"We would like the driver or any passengers that may have been in the vehicle to get in touch.

"There were also a number of other people who were in the area and will have seen the assault taking place.

"We appeal for anyone who saw the assault or were in the area or have any information, no matter how unimportant you think it may be, to please call 101 quoting incident number 39 of May 11, 2017."

PC Gail Cuthbert said: "This was a completely unprovoked attack on a male who was making his way home from a student night out."

Mr Sherriff previously told Lincolnshire Live that he had left the student night 'Quack' at The Engine Shed and was just outside the train tracks when he was approached by two men and attacked.

He said: "I'd just come out of the Student Union and turned left towards the train track.

"I was pulled down to the ground and hit. I put my hands out to try and cover myself."

Mr Sherriff said he was then kicked in the face while on the floor. The incident is believed to have gone on for a few more minutes.

He said: "I lay there for a bit before coughing up blood. My t-shirt was ripped completely in half, my shoes were torn, and my jeans were ripped as well.

"The only thing I can remember afterwards was that there was a group of people around me."

After being escorted back to the Student Union, Mr Sherriff was taken to hospital and an X-ray revealed he has been left with a broken jaw.

Witnesses have said the attackers - both thought to be males - were not wearing coats, with one man believed to be short with a beard, and the other, tall with a slender physique wearing a royal top.

One eyewitness has claimed they heard the name Elliott shouted during the attack.

An online Facebook appeal offering £100 for identification, upon conviction of the alleged attackers, has been launched by Mr Sherriff and his friends.

Following the incident, he has finished his second year early to be with his family and says he no longer feels safe in Lincoln.

He said: "I feel very anxious now, like I need someone to be with me at all times in case it happens again.

And he has issued advice to students following the attack.

He said: "If you can take anything from this, it's to not walk home alone.

"I didn't think it was that much of an issue, but obviously it is. Make sure you are with someone."
