brum this time

A murder investigation has been launched after a taxi controller died days after being assaulted in Nechells.

Officers were called to Embassy Taxis on Oliver Street on the evening of May 26 after reports a man had been assaulted and knocked unconscious.

The 37-year-old was taken to hospital and continued to be treated until 4 June when he died.

A murder investigation has been launched and officers continue to make enquiries.

Detective Inspector Paul Joyce, from the force’s Homicide Team, said: "No arrests have been made as yet but enquiries are moving at a swift pace and I am appealing to anyone who can help the investigation to get in touch.

"We are still trying to understand what happened but we are led to believe that a customer visited the taxi office in Nechells after being picked up earlier in the evening.

"There was some sort of disagreement and he became aggressive and assaulted the member of staff."

We are sending reporters and photographers to the scene and updates will follow.

We used to deal with Embassy Cabs when we did EWR Driver work, they were a good set of lads in the office and could always have a laugh with them over the phones.

I grew up on this street, and my mother still lives there. It used to be a pub named the Oliver Cromwell 20 odd years ago until my mates dad was stabbed to death there. A taxi driver was also shot dead 100m away in IIRC 1999. This was not taxi related though. Nechells the area is called. More like Mogadishu these days though.

Not much about what precisely happened here beyond that posted by Edders above last year, but definitely seems trade-related. Disgruntled punter by the looks of it:

A teenager has admitted killing a taxi controller on a Birmingham street.

Saeed Rahat, 37, died after an incident at Embassy Cars in Oliver Street, Nechells, on June 2, 2017.

Ibrahim Osman, aged 21, from Mead Crescent, Bordesley Green, denied a charge of murder but admitted manslaughter at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday.

Abdiwali Ashkir, aged 20, from Ruthven View, Leeds, denied affray but pleaded guilty to a public order offfence.

The pleas were entered on Tuesday as both were due to stand trial.

They were accepted by the prosecution and the case was adjourned for sentencing on December 17.

Osman was remanded in custody and Askhir was bailed.

A number of tributes to Mr Rahat were paid on BirminghamLive's Facebook page.

Ikhlaq Rasul wrote: “Will be truly missed. Was a good friend and colleague. Top guy and very humble.

“Not seeing you there during shift changes will be difficult.

“May Allah give you highest rank in Jannah. Ameen.”

Other taxi drivers expressed safety fears after the tragedy.

Shaz Saleem, of the West Midlands Drivers Association, said: "This is a shocking and concerning incident.

"One that we hoped would never happen but with the rise of attacks on drivers we was expecting this.

"The reduction of officers on our streets is increasing the risk of attacks on our drivers.

"My thoughts and prayers goes out to the family.

"But the time for talking is over.

"We demand meetings with police and our MPs to assure the trade of their safety.”

Says he's a teenager, then states his age as 21.

But a BBC report last year was headlined:

Teenager, 17, held over Birmingham taxi worker 'murder'

So suspect the latest report has just misstated his age, but still very young either way.

I used to deal with them when I was at Cabline, proper lads and always went out of their way to deliver a EWS driver for you.

More detail about what happened here - sounds a bit "punter loses something in cab, and it's all the driver's/office's fault".

Teen Ibrahim Osman locked up for killing Embassy Cars taxi worker Rahat Saeed in row over £60

Victim was kicked in the head and died later

A teenager has been locked up for seven years for killing a Birmingham taxi controller in a row over a missing £60.

Victim Rahat Saeed, 37, suffered a double skull fracture when he was kicked in the head at Embassy Cars in Nechells.

He died from complications.

Ibrahim Osman, 18, of Mead Crescent, Bordesley Green, had previously admitted a charge of manslaughter.

Abdiwali Ashkir, 20, of Ruthven View, Leeds, who had pleaded guilty to a disorder charge, was handed a 14 week suspended sentence suspended and ordered to perform 250 hours' unpaid work

Birmingham Crown Court heard that, on May 26 last year, a man called Suleman Khan used Embassy Cars but later realised he had lost £60.

When he contacted the firm, they confirmed the driver had found the cash but said it could not be returned immediately and the driver had gone to Manchester.

Mr Khan later went to the company's base in Cromwell Road with three others, including Osman and Ashkir.

They went to the office but were told to leave.

They were then told the driver was on his way and he turned up after 20 minutes with the cash.

Osman went to the driver but was closely followed by Mr Saeed, who asked for the money to be handed to him.

“A dispute then ensued between the four who had arrived to collect the money and Mr Saeed,” said Kevin Hegarty QC, prosecuting.

He said the group demanded to know why they had been told the driver had gone to Manchester and there was some “pushing and shoving”.

Osman and Ashkir then threw some punches at the victim, who moved away.

“But then Osman moved towards the deceased and delivered a kick to the side of his head.

"The kick must have been five foot off the ground.

"This was then followed up promptly by punches again to the face which floored Mr Saeed.

"He did not get up. He lay there motionless. He had some consciousness for a short time.

"The four then left the scene.”

Mr Hegarty said the incident was captured on CCTV and Osman had shown a degree of “satisfaction” for what he had done.

Passing sentence Judge Mark Wall QC said it had been a “trivial dispute” and went on: “There was nothing to stop you walking away.

"Rather than back off you chose to attack him when he was facing towards the car and would not have been able to see your blow coming until the last moment.

"He was unable in any way to defend himself.”

Michael Duck QC, for Osman, said during the incident he had turned his back on a couple of occasions and wanted nothing to do with the violence.

“The two blows were delivered within seconds of each other. In those few seconds he must have lost his temper.”

Jeanette Stevenson, for Ashkir, said “There was a degree of provocation. He got himself involved in something that was nothing to do with him.”

I can remember banning a local plumber over something slightly similar

he left his phone in the car whilst heavily in drink the car then had a job straight after to peterborough

He phoned up demanding the immediate return of the phone.. The driver said he was on his way to peterborough but would drop phone off later. The local plumber then demanded that the passengers be dumped at the road side so driver could immediately return phone  phone was dropped off later

Following day i got an angry phone call from customer accusing the driver of stealing the phone and demanding the driver be sacked and stating that a formal complaint of theft had been made to the police

I decided that there was a strong racial element to the complaint and decided to ban the customer instead

The thing is that people take their anger at their own stupidity out on others because that saves their ego getting bruised

Very sad story, and I hope the thug thinks about his actions every day the prison cell gets locked.

But I bet he doesn't.
