scouse scallies in action A private hire driver who quoted a woman £55 for a seven mile journey said “he was only joking” when his passenger complained. The ECHO has been looking at the issue of taxi and private hire charges following a row between a Delta driver and a customer on Friday. Since then, other taxi passengers have shared their experiences of alleged over-charging during journeys. One of them was John McGinn, a taxi driver himself, who complained to Delta that his daughter was recently asked for £55 for a journey from Yates bar in Queens Square, Liverpool to her home in Leasowe. Wirral - a journey of around 6.8 miles. Mr McGinn explained: “When she got to Hoylake Road in Moreton the driver said it would be £55 for the fare - my daughter is 23 and knew what the normal fare was - but the driver was still insisting it was £55. She was being ripped off and knew it.” Mr McGinn said his daughter refused to pay and asked the driver to contact the Delta office who confirmed the normal, much lower price that his daughter would usually pay. was £17.60. After he complained to Delta on his daughter’s behalf, Mr McGinn said he was told that the firm had spoken to the driver in question and his replay was that he was “only joking with my daughter”. He said: “I wonder how many other people he has joked with have paid the fare he asked for? And if he was only joking why was he arguing with my daughter.” The ECHO has seen a response from Delta, sent to Mr McGinn after they investigated his complaint. |
