Sadiq Khan welcomed efforts to reach a compromise over Uber in a sign that the taxi-hailing company would continue to operate in London.

The mayor of London recognised that Uber had apologised for mistakes and appeared ready to change after Transport for London (TfL) refused to renew its licence, saying that it was not a fit and proper private car hire operator. It cited its approach to reporting criminal offences and carrying out background checks on drivers.

The company, which is used by 3.5 million people in the capital, is appealing against TfL’s refusal.

As these comments are before the appeal is even heard I think the Mayor should keep his trap shut.

I think the mayor has already been persuaded that TFL will be financially much better off allowing Uber back into "the game" as the london cabbies call it i believe

First Khan penned an article for the Guardian titled: "Uber deserved to lose its licence".

Then he said it would be "improper for politicians to interfere with a quasi-judicial matter".

Now he appears to be interfering.

Either he's totally clueless and a complete liability, or he knows it's a done deal so he can say what he likes knowing it won't be held against TfL in court.

Always thought TfL were simply sabre-rattling to force Uber's hand on compliance. Think they got a bit too cosy and had to show them who's boss. Probably knew all along Uber would just play ball and the business would continue in pretty much its current form.

Of course, the employment status case probably more of a threat to Uber, but the fantasists who think that has any bearing on Uber's fit and proper status are in for a rude awakening.

the brown envelope would be in the form of Uber accepting and not challenging TFL's new enlarged fee system. these days all councils are interested in one thing ....money and as much of it as they can grab in council tax fees and charges

To be honest it was a brave decision to revoke Uber's license, and as many have said they could have reissued with extra conditions, or at least made the offer.

I'm quite sure Uber will get an ops license back, but I think Uber's problems will not be over. The VAT and the 'workers' court cases, alongside the Reading touting issue, will cause them significant problems.

I also believe more and more competition will come from new entrants, and the existing trade getting it's act together.

Maybe the future will be drivers having all the apps on their phones and working that way.

In that scenario all the firms will have sufficient cars to cover the work, and as is the case in the US and India, those drivers will cherry pick the better work hopefully leading firms to charge more sensible rates.

But maybe Uber's biggest long term problem is that people will find the novelty of using an app to book a car no longer as hip as it once was. Speaking to people in the know there are indications that, at firms with app and phone booking options, that app bookings aren't being used as much as they were when they were launched.

Be interested to see if others are noticing that.

HMG will make sure VAT isn't an issue for Uber but will make it an issue for everyone else instead

Nah.

So much easier getting VAT out of one, rather than 40,000.
