One of our drivers had a drop off at East Midlands Airport this evening. Now we all know that it costs £2.00 for up to 10 mins so there must have been quite a queue to get out because when he got to the barrier the machine asked for £6614.00 Has anyone ever been asked for more?

Yes loads of times, once I pressed the intercom to be told I had to pay it. I pulled back and let the next car behind me pay, I stuck to his bumper and when he went out I followed him, the barrier didn't come back down because it's infra red. I didn't pay and haven't done to this day. When I drop off there now I wait for someone to pay then I follow them out.

A few people tried that with the rising bollards here in Chester, it never ended well, must have been 50 or 60 smashed up cars over the years.

How much of a gap are you leaving from the car in front?

The ones on you tube are Manchester, haven’t seen any from Chester. They’ve remodelled the junction now and made it a no entry with a ‘bus gate’ further on which has an ANPR camera. Only buses, taxis and PH are allowed entry.

Normal gap, there's sensors on the barriers stopping it from coming down and hitting your car. Remember if it came down when you were exiting while paying they'd be getting claims thrown at them like confetti

There is a camera on the right hand side just past the barrier at floor level. It is most probably checking number plates. If the gap between cars is enough for this camera to see the number plate there will be a record of vehicles leaving without payment. At some point this could be an issue.

Just one thing about this idea Nidge. The camaras will clock your car entering the pay zone but they don't register you leaving so presumably at some point they will hit you with a very large bill because the system will still think you are in there.

Never had any come back since I've been doing it. Remember, if that barrier drops and damages your car there's a claim.
