To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what steps his Department is taking to ensure that electric vehicles are affordable to (a) fleet operators and (b) consumers.

Jesse Norman Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Transport)

The Government has several plug-in grant funding schemes in place to assist with the cost of purchasing ultra low emission cars, vans and taxis; which both fleet operators and consumers can take advantage of. We have now supported over 160,000 ultra low emission vehicles onto Britain’s roads since the plug in car grant began in 2011 and further vehicles will be supported. Ultra low emission vehicles also benefit from a favourable tax regime. Company car tax is explicitly designed to make it more attractive for employers and employees to choose cars which emit the lowest levels of CO2. As a result, users of these vehicles have lower company car tax rates in comparison to conventionally fuelled cars.

This'll be interesting.

The best place for a charging point in respect of taxis is probably a cab rank - there's not enough rank spaces.

And considering the range of the new electric vehicles - I hope passengers aren't wanting to travel too far.

As I have always said Electric is not the answer there are a lot of technologies out there that can reduce or negate emissions either by improving fuels of improving combustion

and of course then there is the real future of transport the fuel cell

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in a place like Dundee, where there are quite a few electric cabs (Nissan Leafs, I think) but very few charging points (as far as I know), it must be a logistical nightmare recharging at the end of a shift etc?

It will get better.

How big were mobile phones when they first came out, compared to now? Most of the smaller electric cars do 130-180 on a single charge. In two or three years the cars will all drive will have electric versions doing 200-300 on a single charge.

With fast charges (20 mins for 90%) available now, and WiFi charging for ranks (5 or so years time), I'm very positive about the electric revolution.

The owners should have a charging point installed in their homes, via gov grant, or have a charging point installed in a street lamp post, or posts, near their homes.

Until they get a range of 400+ miles regardless of time of day, time of year, the miserable British weather and then have a faster charging time and become more comparable in price to present diesel cars they are never going to suit any taxi work other than short around town hacking jobs, No good to me out here 60 miles from the nearest city or airport if I cant get at least 3 complete circular runs in before the battery dies, otherwise I'd need two cars , one running and one on charge just to do what i can do now..
