Taxi driver attacked by callous teens

The daughter of a brave taxi driver who was viciously attacked by three
callous teenagers last weekend has called for young offenders to be sent
to boot camps.

The 57-year-old driver from Norbury was sent to an address in Downton
Avenue, Streatham, at about 10.30pm on Saturday night after his taxi
company received a call requesting a car.

When he arrived, three black youths, all thought to be about 18-years-old,
were waiting outside the house. They told him they needed to put some
cases in his boot and then savagely kicked him to the ground as he
opened it up.

They kicked him in the head three times and punched him as they tried to
steal his car keys, eventually making off with the vehicle's satellite
navigation system in the direction of Streatham Hill.

"My dad has injured his head and his pride has been shaken," said his
25-year-old daughter Andrea. "But he'll go back to work because he won't
let the youths win.

"He's such a hard-working kind man who would do anything to help anyone.

"If the youths had a knife or gun on them then my dad could have been
killed. I don't want him to become another statistic."

Andrea, who asked to keep her family's surname private, thinks more
needs to be done to teach young people about respect, discipline and hard
work and is backing a petition to urge the Government to create a boot
camp system to deal with young offenders.

"These crimes have got to stop," said Andrea. "Young people need role
models and as a community we need to stop these things from happening.

"It's not fair that innocent people are preyed on by dysfunctional parts of society."

Detective Inspector Andy McDonald from Streatham police confirmed the
attack had taken place but said there had not been any similar incidents in
the area.

No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.

If you have any information about the attack call the incident room at
Streatham police station on 020 8649 2272 or Crimestoppers
anonymously on 0800 555 111.

And the chances are no one ever will.

Doesn't Streatham come under London? In which case wouldn't this chap be a London Hackney or London private hire driver?

I doubt CCTV equipment that automatically turns on when the meter is engaged would have done this chap any good.

Obviously these three black youths didn't live at the address, therefore they had no suitcases. Lesson learnt, don't get out of your cab to open the boot until you can see whats going in it. Another lesson install CCTV that records everything around you, easier said than done but incidents like this demand it as a safety measure. Remember that when your negotiating with your licensing authority.

It would be sooooooooo nice if you didn't have to negotiate with brain dead councillors who treat taxi driver safety as a secondary consideration but until that time comes your are stuck with this relic system from the past that's put councillors in charge of Taxi licensing. I wouldn't mind betting that this guy didn't have CCTV in his cab. Does the PCO allow CCTV now?

Regards

It was a Minicab company.

The clues in 'car' and 'putting cases in the boot'.

That must be the case cos to put the cases in the boot one has to get out of the car, and the chances of that happening in a black cab is less than none. :-$
