Friends of taxi driver killed in Middlesbrough crash raise money to support his family

The friends of the taxi driver who died after a collision in Middlesbrough on Tuesday are raising money to support his family.

27-year-old Malik Ameer Abbas died when a Mercedes C220 collided with his Volkswagen Passat on Dixon's Bank at around 11:40 pm.

The 32-year-old driver of the Mercedes was taken to James Cook University Hospital with serious injuries.

Malik came to Teesside from Pakistan as a university student and would send his wages from part-time jobs back to support his family.

In tribute, his friends are raising funds to continue that financial help for Malik's family.

Amaan Ayoub described Malik - known as Ameer to his friends - as a "one-of-a-kind person who had a big heart".

"He would go out of his way to do anything and everything for a person as long as it makes them smile. He was a character, used to pull pranks and jokes on his friends and colleagues. He was a jolly lad who will be missed," Amaan says.

"My family, myself and his best friend Kashaf are doing a fundraiser for his family back home to help them through this difficult time. Ameer would send whatever he would earn back home to his parents to help them keep a roof over their head and food on the table. That's the sort of person Ameer was."

A JustGiving page has been set up with a target of £5,000 and collections will be taking place at three mosques in Middlesbrough at next week's Friday prayers (Friday 8 April).

It is hoped that Malik's funeral will take place in Middlesbrough this week and his body will be repatriated to Pakistan soon after.

Boro Cars, whom Malik had worked for since late 2019, said he was a "polite and a quiet young man" who had only returned to work the day before the accident after taking a short break.

A spokesperson said, "He was always polite and a quiet young man who worked hard to support his family. He was a valued member of our team who enjoyed his work serving the local community.

"We are all deeply shocked and very upset by the tragic circumstances of his death.

"We are in contact with his family in Pakistan and shall provide them with whatever support we can at this very difficult time. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this time."

Prior to the collision officers had identified a Mercedes travelling at high speed on Marton Road which they attempted to stop.

Cleveland Police has since been referred to the police watchdog.

Dixon's Bank was closed for several hours whilst emergency services worked at the scene.

Detectives are investigating the incident and are appealing for anyone with information, or dashcam footage, to come forward.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

It comes as an Independent Office for Police Conduct investigation into the period before the the crash concludes

A man has been interviewed for the offence of causing death by dangerous driving after much-loved taxi driver lost his life in a devastating crash.

Malik Ameer Abbas died after his Volkswagen Passat and a Mercedes C220 collided on the A172 at Dixons Bank. Heartbroken friends and colleagues paid tribute to the 'lovely and polite' 27-year-old, who lived in Middlesbrough, and thousands of pounds were raised to support his family in Pakistan following the horror smash shortly before midnight on March 30.

The 32-year-old driver of the Mercedes was taken to James Cook University Hospital where he remained for some time in a critical condition but Cleveland Police has now confirmed he has been discharged. He has since been interviewed for the offence of causing death by dangerous driving and remains under investigation whilst enquiries into the tragedy continue.

Appealing for information following the crash, Cleveland Police said officers had identified a Mercedes travelling at high speed on Marton Road which they attempted to stop. The incident was referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) due to the police activity, which is a mandatory requirement, and an investigation has now been carried out.

The IOPC has confirmed there was no wrongdoing on the police officer's part in the period leading up to the collision. At the time, the road was closed for almost nine hours, between Stainton Way and Gunnergate Lane, so the collision investigation teams could carry out initial inquiries.

“Our deepest sympathies remain with Malik Abbas’s family following his tragic death," said an IOPC spokesman. "Our investigation into the police pursuit of a Mercedes driver prior to the collision with the taxi that Mr Abbas was driving on Dixon’s Bank in Middlesbrough on 30 March 2022 concluded this month.

“We found the police officer driving acted in accordance with the relevant policies and procedures and there was no evidence to justify the bringing of disciplinary proceedings, or that a criminal offence had been committed.”

Following Malik's tragic death, more than £8,000 was raised to support the young Boro Taxis driver's family. A spokesperson for the firm said previously: "He was always polite and a quiet young man who worked hard to support his family.

"He was a valued member of our team who enjoyed his work serving the local community." While friend Najabat Ramzan, who met Malik when they worked on the NHS Test and Trace in Middlesbrough, told Teesside Live: "I was lucky enough to work with him on the track and trace at the Riverside Stadium.

"I met him during lockdown. He was a lovely lad, very polite and always wanted to help people. Whatever you asked him to do he just got on with it and he always had a smile on his face."

Enquiries into the crash continue.

A motorist has appeared in court charged with causing the death of a Middlesbrough taxi driver in a fatal collision.

Malik Ameer Abbas died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the impact when a white Mercedes hit the Volkswagen Passat he was travelling in while working as a taxi driver last year.

James Hobson made his first appearance at Teesside Magistrates' Court today (Thursday, January 5) after the 27-year-old died following a crash on the A172 on March 29.

Teesside Live actually carried a page with live updates from the magistrates' court. Which seemed a bit over the top, since it simply seemed a fairly routine appearance and referral to a higher court.

But I'd forgotten that, prior to last week, there had been no update on any charges on here, and I'd also forgotten that the accused had spent months in hospital.

And still suffering the ill effects, if the report below is anything to go by.

The following are just extracts from the live feed.

James Hobson has appeared at court wearing grey shorts and a beige jumper.

He walks with the aid of a stick and his leg is in a brace.

Hobson has spoken to give his name, age and address as Washington Grove, Norton.

Hobson is charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Teesside Magistrates' Court has heard that the case is indictable only and can only be heard at a higher court.

The details of the offence are that on March 29, 2022, in Middlesbrough it is alleged that Hobson caused the death of Malik Ameer Abbas while driving a Mercedes C Class dangerously.

District Judge Steven Hood said: "I am sending this case to the crown court at Teesside on February 2 at 10am. Between now and then I will release you on unconditional bail."

No further details of the alleged incident were outlined by prosecutor Rachel Butt or defence solicitor Nick Ayres.

Mercedes driver admits causing death of taxi driver in horror smash

A man has pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving of a taxi driver in a high-speed smash.

James Hobson, 33, will now be sentenced next month.

Middlesbrough taxi driver Malik Ameer Abbas died after a late night crash on the A172 at Dixons Bank, on March 29 last year. Mr Abbas, 27, was driving a Volkswagen Passat.

Hobson was in a Mercedes C220, when he hit Mr Abbas close to the junctions of Captain Cook's Crescent and Grange Crescent in Marton.

After his death, Mr Abbas was described as "a lovely, hardworking lad who always had a smile on his face".

He had studied for a time at Teesside University before becoming a taxi driver.

A spokesperson for Boro Cars said at the time that all at the firm "deeply shocked and very upset by the tragic circumstances of his death".

Mr Abbas joined the firm in December 2019 and had just returned to work on Monday after a short break.

The crash happened at 11.40pm and Dixons Bank was closed between Stainton Way and Gunnergate Lane for almost nine hours for accident investigation work to be carried out.

Cleveland Police said at the time that officers identified a Mercedes travelling at high speed on Marton Road before the collision which they attempted to stop. The incident was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to this police activity, which was a mandatory requirement.

The IOPC confirmed last August there was no wrongdoing on the police officer's part in the period leading up to the collision.

“Our deepest sympathies remain with Malik Abbas’s family following his tragic death," said an IOPC spokesman. "Our investigation into the police pursuit of a Mercedes driver prior to the collision with the taxi that Mr Abbas was driving on Dixons Bank in Middlesbrough on 30 March 2022 has concluded.

“We found the police officer driving acted in accordance with the relevant policies and procedures and there was no evidence to justify the bringing of disciplinary proceedings, or that a criminal offence had been committed.”

Hobson, of Washington Grove in Norton, has been remanded into custody until March 31, when he will be sentenced.

If I was a betting man, which I'm not, I would say as he pleaded guilty he will get about 5 years.

Whereas the family of Mr Abbas have got a life sentence.

Man jailed for killing taxi driver in Middlesbrough speeding crash

Image

A man who killed a taxi driver in a head-on car crash has been jailed.

James Hobson was speeding and on the wrong side of the road when he smashed into Malik Ameer Abbas' VW in Marton, Middlesbrough, in March 2022, Cleveland Police said.

Hobson, 33, was jailed for seven years and four months at Teesside Crown Court after admitting causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr Abbas' family said their hearts had been broken by his death.

Det Ch Insp Peter Carr said Hobson had been seriously injured in the crash but was "very lucky" not to be killed.

"Unfortunately Mr Abbas' family now have to live without their loved one for the rest of their lives as a result of Hobson's actions," Mr Carr said.

In a statement, Mr Abbas' family said the 27-year-old moved to the UK in 2013 to support his family back in Pakistan.

They said: "He had always looked after everyone.

"He had many plans and goals to achieve and was a very hardworking, honest person.

"No-one and nothing can fill the gap which he has left in our hearts and our family owing to his tragic death.

"As a family our hearts have been broken and we will never get over this."

Hobson was also banned from driving for 11 years and eight months.

That is a loooooooong ban. I am wondering if there's a history of serious motoring offences ?
