Official police press release :-|

Another one in the West Midlands area, just a month after the Wolverhampton murder...

Man arrested in Solihull murder investigation

https://www.west-midlands.police.uk/new ... tigation-0

We've arrested a man after a taxi driver was found fatally stabbed in Solihull early on Tuesday (29 Nov) morning.

Mohammed Istakhar, aged 44, was found with serious injuries at around 6.45am at the junction of Braggs Farm Lane at Lady Lane. Sadly nothing could be done to save him.

Investigators understand Mr Istakhar had earlier that morning driven a fare from Birmingham city centre to the Solihull area.

An 18-year-old man attended a police station yesterday evening (Wed) and was arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody today (Thu) for further questioning as investigations continue.

Mr Istakhar's devastated family have today paid tribute to him.

In a statement they said: "Our daddy, our hero. Our hard working father has been taken so quickly from us.

"He was our world. He was so loved, respected by the whole of our community.

“He leaves behind his grieving wife, his five children who he loved deeply, his elderly mother, his three sisters, his one brother and fur babies.

“Our Martyr will live on and has set at an example for his children. He will never be forgotten. See you on the other side daddy."

Det Insp Michelle Thurgood, from Force CID, said: "Our thoughts are with the family of Mr Istakhar at this tragic time and our investigation teams are focused on establishing exactly what happened.

"One person has been arrested and we are continuing with door-to-door enquiries as well as CCTV trawls and forensic investigations at several locations as we build a full picture of events.

"We have already spoken with a number of people who were in the area or live nearby and would urge anyone who hasn't yet been in touch to contact us."

If you can help, please contact is via Live Chat on our website, or by calling 101, and quote log 515 of 29/11/22.

West Midlands Police say they believe Oliver Pugh was 'involved in the death' of Mohammed Istakhar in Solihull

Police say a man suspected of being involved in the death of a taxi driver in the West Midlands could be in Derbyshire. Mohammed Istakhar was found fatally stabbed in Solihull on Tuesday (November 29).

West Midlands Police have tweeted to say they suspect that Oliver Pugh is involved in the 44-year-old's death and they are trying to trace him in connection with the alleged murder. A spokesperson said: "We really need to hear from anyone who has information on the whereabouts of the 19-year-old so we can trace and question him."

Derbyshire police subsequently tweeted to say: "Can you help officers at West Midlands Police with their appeal in connection with a murder in Solihull? It is possible this man may be in the Derbyshire area."

An 18-year-old has already been charged in connection with the father of five's death. Luca De-Fazio, from Solihull, faced magistrates in Birmingham on December 2.

Anyone who can help West Midlands Police should dial 101 and quote log number 515 of 29/11/22.

Police involved in the investigation have been searching a pond as part of the investigation. Locals said that officers were searching a balancing pond - used to help control floods - on a new build estate.

A resident said: "Police have been searching a pond. Officers told us all they have everything they need and won’t be back. A police photographer took pictures, then they all went."

'Teens murdered taxi driver Mohammed Istakhar in country lane after city centre night out'

Image

Two teenagers 'murdered' a taxi driver leaving him for dead in a Solihull country lane after a night out in Birmingham city centre, a court heard. Mohammed Istakhar was found face down in Braggs Farm Lane, in the areas of Earslwood and Dickens Heath, around 6.30am on November 29 last year.

Two men on their way to work discovered the 46-year-old and saw that he had been fatally stabbed, after noticing a trail of blood in the road. He was formally pronounced dead when paramedics arrived.

Mr Istakhar had the 'misfortune' of driving home Luca De-Fazio and Oliver Pugh, a jury was told. The two teenagers formed a plan to lure him to a 'remote spot' under the pretence of fetching money for the fare before returning with knives, it was alleged.

One witness, who met them in Rosies nightclub and then left as they went to Dixy Chicken, recalled that Pugh asked her if she was a 'snitch' before he said he was going to 'rob a taxi', prosecutor Mark Heywood KC said.

De-Fazio, aged 18, of no fixed address and Pugh, 19, of New Meadow Close, Solihull, stand trial at Birmingham Crown Court where they deny a charge of murder. Pugh has also pleaded not guilty to possession of a bladed article.

Opening the case today, Monday, Mr Heywood explained that shortly after 6.30am on November 29 last year two men were driving along Braggs Farm Lane in Solihull on their way to work.

He said: "It was still very dark and Braggs Farm Lane is unlit. Suddenly they came across the body of a man. He was lying face down in the road. They stopped their car and went over to see what could be done.

"They saw no obvious injuries at first but on closer examination noticed there was blood on the road surface and round the feet of the man. When his clothing had been lifted it appeared this man had been stabbed. They called emergency services.

"They did what they could in the hope he could be resuscitated but there was nothing to be done. When paramedics arrived on the scene they formally pronounced life was extinct."

Mr Heywood continued: "The body was that of Mohammed Istakhar. He was 46 years old when he died. He had been working as a taxi driver and his misfortune was to have driven these two defendants - Luca De-Fazio and Oliver Pugh - back from Birmingham after they spent the evening out in the city centre.

"It's the prosecution case that a plan was formed by these defendants to direct the taxi to a remote spot where they could go to a caravan on the pretext of getting money for the fare. While Mr Istakhar waited they would return with knives, at least one of which was used to attack him.

"Despite efforts to defend himself it was used to stab him in the heart. They took his car keys and left him bleeding to death if not already dead and drove off in his taxi."

Taking the jury through the sequence of events Mr Heywood said the defendants were caught on CCTV at Rosies club on Broad Street at 12.32am where they got talking to a female witness. He added: "She was sat with her friends at a different table to the two men but Oliver Pugh kept coming over to chat. They left the club together and moved on to Dixy Chicken.

"Before they went their separate ways Oliver Pugh asked her if she was a 'snitch'. Then he said: 'I'm going to rob taxi'. She assumed he wasn't serious and laughed it off."

Proceeding.

Not sure if this is a re-trial, or the same one which was delayed, but this is an hour-by-hour briefing on what's been happening in court today.

Lying teenager Oliver Pugh murdered taxi driver Mohammed Istakhar then tried to pin it on friend

A lying teenager murdered his taxi driver in a plot to rob his car, then tried to pin it on his friend. Oliver Pugh, 19, got Mohammed Istakhar to drive him and his associate Luca De-Fazio out of Birmingham city centre to Braggs Farm Lane in Solihull, a remote country road near Earlswood and Dickens Heath.

There he claimed he would fetch his fare for the trip from a nearby caravan where he was staying, but instead he produced a knife which he drove into the 44-year-old father's chest. It was a pre-prepared plan executed to deadly effect in the early hours of November 29, 2022.

It did not take long for ruthless Pugh to turn on De-Fazio, who was not found responsible for the killing by a jury. Once both were arrested by the police they gave completely different accounts of what had supposedly happened.

De-Fazio, aged 18, attended Solihull Police Station voluntarily with his father, a support worker and a bag of clothes. He claimed when they first arrived in Braggs Farm Lane that he waited at the taxi vaping, while Pugh went to the caravan.

De-Fazio said Pugh came back holding two knifes and pushed one to his chest saying 'take it', to which he said he replied 'leave it'. He alleged they got back in the taxi and Pugh sat in the front seat where he started waving his knife around and 'touched' Mr Istakhar who ran off, with Pugh chasing him.

De-Fazio recalled that as he followed he heard the driver plead: 'I have a family, I have kids, please don't hurt me' before he caught up and saw him hand Pugh the keys saying 'take them'. He claimed they left in Mr Istakhar's car but at one point he had to get out and push after Pugh crashed it into a bush about 25 seconds after fleeing Braggs Farm Lane.

De-Fazio said it was at that stage that he dropped the knife Pugh had given him earlier. He said Pugh later sent him social media posts saying someone had died, so he called his dad and decided to go to the police.

De-Fazio told officers he felt he had no control over his own actions that night because he was 'intimidated' by Pugh, who fled to Worksop in Nottinghamshire after the incident.

Following a manhunt he was arrested there on December 1. Pugh remarked to the police: 'Murder what's all that about?'. After being told the allegation he added: "That's b******s I've never stabbed anyone in my life."

In interview he claimed De-Fazio had accompanied him to the caravan from Braggs Farm Lane, and that it was De-Fazio who grabbed two knives from the vehicle and 'sprinted' back to the taxi. Pugh alleged De-Fazio chased Mr Istakhar then came back and handed him one of the knives.

He accepted they drove off in the victim's Vauxhall Insignia but said he had not found out the driver had died until a few days after the incident. He denied stabbing Mr Istakhar. Pugh told officers he had only gone to Nottinghamshire to see a friend and that he was intending to go the police voluntarily himself.

During a trial at Birmingham Crown Court, a jury was shown CCTV which showed Mr Istakhar running away from Pugh on Braggs Farm Lane, with De-Fazio following some distance behind. They also heard from a witness who claimed she met Pugh at Rosies bar earlier in the night and that he had told her: "I'm going to rob a taxi."

Pugh, of New Meadow Close, Solihull, was found guilty of murder and possession of a bladed article. He will be sentenced to life with a minimum term of imprisonment to be determined at a hearing on September 22.

De-Fazio, of no fixed address, was cleared of murder but had admitted possession of a bladed article. He was sentenced to one month which he had already served whilst remanded in custody.

Knob head is IMO a lucky fella, and maybe should have been spending a few months with his scumbag stepson.

Stepdad of taxi driver killer Oliver Pugh forced teen's trial to be restarted - costing taxpayers £30k

https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/m ... r-27299867

Oliver Pugh, left, and stepdad Byron Holiday.

The stepdad of a teenage killer caused havoc at his trial by 'foolishly' taking a picture of a juror, it can now be revealed. Oliver Pugh, aged 19, was found guilty of murder for stabbing taxi driver Mohammed Istakhar to death in Braggs Farm Lane, Solihull, in the early hours of November 29 last year.

But his trial at Birmingham Crown Court was halted for three days and ultimately restarted after his stepfather Byron Holiday sparked a police investigation at the beginning of the proceedings. The setback cost £30,000 of public money.

Reporting restrictions meant the incident could not be detailed until now to avoid prejudicing the trial. The case was initially opened by the prosecution on June 12 this year, but the next morning a female juror submitted a note to the court raising concerns.

It was alleged that Mr Holiday had taken a photograph of her as she stood in the queue outside court waiting to go in. Police officers later quizzed him and found the image in the deleted files section of his phone.

Mr Holiday was summoned into court to provide an explanation. Judge Simon Drew KC warned if he was found to have acted in contempt or court he could be fined, imprisoned or both. He gave him the opportunity to seek legal advice but Mr Holiday opted to deal with the matter there and then instead.

The 46-year-old, from Solihull, took to the witness box and confirmed his name, age, address and the fact he was Pugh's stepdad. He said: "I have been giving a running commentary back home and I was talking on my phone. Absent-mindedly I was saying I was going in. I said I could see the jurors coming up so it was time to go in.

"As I did it I realised it was a silly thing to do and deleted it. That was it. I'm so sorry. It was just a stupid moment. I didn't realise the severity of my actions. I'm sorry for wasting your time and everyone else's time in the room."

Mr Holiday further described his actions as 'idiotic'. Judge Drew accepted the explanation and took no further action against him. He told him: "It was a foolish act on your behalf and without thinking of the consequences rather than anything done to do any mischief as far as this case is concerned.

"I do need to spell this out to you, what you have done is a very serious matter. I could have dealt with you for contempt, found you in contempt and imposed a short sentence of imprisonment."

Judge Drew did, however, discharge the jury and re-selected a new panel with the case having to be opened for a second time in a matter of days. He added: "These courts have to ensure the trial process is particularly protected and in particular jurors feel safe to come in and out of court.

"The juror who spotted you was right and you can understand how anxious she would have been. These days people press send of a photograph long before they engage their minds as to the consequences of their actions.

"The consequences of what you have done are that I have had to adjourn the case and discharge the jury. Three days of court time have been taken up and used. It costs £10,000 a day to run a courtroom."

The judge did not order Mr Holiday to pay any costs and permitted him to attend the rest of the trial but warned 'everybody will be keeping an eye on you'.

The trial heard how Pugh and co-defendant Luca De-Fazio, 18, had been to Rosies bar on Broad Street in Birmingham city centre on November 28 before they caught 44-year-old Mr Istakhar's taxi back to Solihull the following morning. The prosecution case was that the driver was intentionally lured back to Braggs Farm Lane on the pretence of the teenagers collecting his fare from a caravan, but ultimately he was stabbed to death and his car was stolen.

CCTV showed the victim running away from Pugh with De-Fazio some distance behind. Pugh, of New Meadow Close, Shirley, was found guilty of murder and possession of a bladed article. He will be sentenced on September 22.

De-Fazio was cleared of murder but had already admitted possession of a bladed article for which he received one month's imprisonment.

Jailed for 27 Years =D>

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-66891845

A man who stabbed a taxi driver to death after assaulting several men in unprovoked attacks has been jailed for at least 27 years.

Oliver Pugh was intent on causing harm in November, police said, when he stabbed Mohammed Istakhar near Braggs Farm Road in Solihull.

He was seen chasing Mr Istakhar down a street, before his taxi was driven to Pugh's house in the town.

The 20-year-old was sentenced to life at Birmingham Crown Court.

Hours before the stabbing, Mr Istakhar had picked up Pugh and another man in his taxi in Birmingham city centre.

They were later seen on CCTV chasing him towards Lady Lane and then returning to his taxi minutes later without him.

As they drove away, an item, believed to be Mr Istakhar's phone, was thrown from the car, West Midlands Police said.

The pair removed the taxi livery and number plates at Pugh's home before the vehicle was recovered by police at Malpit Close.

When Mr Istakhar's body was discovered, Pugh's passport was found in his pocket, the force said.

Pugh was tracked down and found to be hiding in a caravan in Derbyshire, where he was arrested.

'No apparent reason'
During police interviews, both denied any involvement in Mr Istakhar's death and blamed each other.

Pugh denied a charge of murder but was convicted at Birmingham Crown Court in July.

Luca De-Fazio, 18, was found not guilty of murder, but sentenced to one month in prison after admitting possession of a knife.

Det Insp Michelle Thurgood from the homicide team, said: "This was a horrific attack on a father who was out working that night to provide for his family.

"Earlier that evening, Pugh had also assaulted other men for no apparent reason. He was clearly intent on causing harm to others that night."
