Don't want to sound harsh, but I'm surprised they even got 20 drivers to sign up for this, at least those doing the job on the streets. But I suppose that's just something like one per cent of all Glasgow's HCDs :?

Thousands of Scots sign up for naloxone training to help save lives

Stop The Deaths – a joint initiative by the Scottish Government and the Scottish Drugs Forum – was advertised across the country.

Thousands of Scots have signed up to learn how to save someone’s life in the event of an opioid overdose.

Almost 4500 people responded to a nationwide campaign to learn how to spot the signs of an overdose, administer anti-overdose spray naloxone and receive a free kit.

Stop The Deaths – a joint initiative by the Scottish Government and the Scottish Drugs Forum (SDF) – was advertised across the country after launching in August last year.

Glasgow Taxis helped to raise awareness of the campaign and more than 20 of the firm’s drivers have volunteered to carry naloxone.

Dougie MacPherson, Glasgow Taxis chairman, said: “Glasgow Taxis is proud to support this very important initiative.

“On a personal level, during the 1980s – before entering the taxi trade – I worked [as a police officer] in the north of Glasgow in some of the city’s worst affected areas like Possilpark.

“Heroin and HIV destroyed a generation back then and it left an indelible impression on those who experienced it including me.

“The current drug death figures serve as a stark reminder that the problem has not gone away and any way of reducing the number of deaths is worth supporting.”

In 2020, there were 1339 drug-related deaths registered in Scotland, 5% (59 deaths) more than in 2019. This was the largest number ever recorded since the series began in 1996.

Kirsten Horsburgh, strategy coordinator for drug death prevention at SDF, thanked Glasgow Taxis for helping to share the campaign.

She added: “The campaign has demonstrated that people in Scotland are keen to assist efforts to prevent drug deaths.

“Naloxone is an emergency treatment that can help save someone’s life and it is essential that people are equipped with the knowledge, skills and tools they need to provide help to someone experiencing a life-threatening overdose.”

The campaign has since finished, but people can still register their interest in receiving training and a free kit.

Angela Constance, drugs policy minister, described the initiative as a “vital part of the national mission on the drug deaths crisis”.

The MSP added: “We hope that the campaign has also helped reduce the stigmatisation of people at risk of overdose and people with a drug problem more broadly.

“Naloxone is one of a wide range of measures being used to address the public health emergency of drugs deaths, but it plays an important role and I hope as many people as possible will visit the Stop The Deaths website to find out more.”

Where does it all end?

Maybe a medical degree will be added to the taxi/PH entry criteria.

This is in the Daily Record version. Suspect most Glasgow HCDs would be a bit more hard-nosed about this. For a start, doubt they'd want to attract people coming up to them on the ranks and asking for naloxone kits.

Daily Record wrote:
Taxi driver Jim Stevenson has signed up as a potential life saver by carrying overdose reversal kits in his cab.

Jim, 57, is among 4,500 people to sign up for carrying the opiate antidote after a public awareness campaign.

His taxi has been emblazoned with the Stop the Deaths livery, which is aimed at reducing prejudice against those most likely to have overdoses, amid Scotland’s national emergency.

More than 20 of Jim’s co-drivers at Glasgow Taxis have also signed up for the initiative, which means they will be armed with the blue kits and trained in the use of them.

Jim said: “I think taxis are present in the heart of communities and you see all life in the back of your cab, good and bad.

“I’d personally like to think I was in a position to help anyone who had an emergency in my taxi, be it a heart attack or a drug overdose.

“I think it should be part of any taxi driver’s attitude to be helpful and you can’t offer more help than to save someone’s life.”[...]

Dougie [MacPherson] said that the livery on Jim’s cab had already resulted in several people coming forward to ask for naloxone kits.

Sorry, but I'd be more concerned about keeping them out of my taxi in the first place. And not having a logo on the side that might act as a magnet for anyone likely to be ODing in the back :-|

Phone an ambulance. They might even turn up within a day or two :-|
