he most dangerous places to drive in the UK outside of London have been revealed.

Analysis of figures by the Department of Transport revealed Blackpool, famous for its Christmas lights and long sandy beaches, is the most dangerous area to drive. Between 2012 and 2021, there were, on average, 1,113 collisions per billion vehicle miles in the area. It found 2012 had the highest numbers, with 1,370 collisions per billion vehicle miles, and 2020 the lowest, with just 849 collisions per billion vehicle miles.

Hull (950) came in at a close second, followed by Luton (911), Brighton and Hove (903) and Southampton (855). When looking at all UK areas, the average number of collisions per billion vehicle miles is 550.

A spokesperson for OneSureInsurance said: “While many might have expected figures to be lower in 2020 and 2021 due to ongoing lockdowns and thus fewer cars on the road, in some areas, this isn’t even the case, with some areas even having their highest figures yet in that timeframe. The top ten contains areas from every corner of the country, which highlights how road safety should be paramount, no matter where you are in the UK.”

A study by insurance brokers OneSureInsurance analysed historical data from the Department for Transport Statistics to see which UK areas outside of London had the highest average collisions per billion vehicle miles over a ten-year period. Outside of London, Southend was the eighth most dangerous place to drive in the UK. According to their figures, there was an average of 811.34 collisions per billion vehicle miles between 2012 and 2021.
