East Dunbartonshire Council opens the door for new taxi licence applicants

East Dunbartonshire Council is now inviting applications for new Taxi Operator Licences, aiming to boost the local availability of taxis.

The council has set out a flexible approach for potential applicants, stating that it not necessary to own a car or have insurance in place at the time of application. Those required arrangements can be made once the approval of the licence is secured.

Prospective taxi operators are allowed to apply for up to two licences. The council will confirm when all necessary checks have been completed. Following this, applicants must provide detailed vehicle information such as the registration number, insurance details, and proof of ownership. Only after these details are verified will the licences be officially issued along with the corresponding taxi plates.

The council has clarified that driving a taxi requires a separate Taxi Driver Licence, which must also be obtained from the council.

This initiative is part of East Dunbartonshire's efforts to enhance transport services and meet the community’s growing transportation needs.

Councillor Gordan Low, Convener of the Policy and Resources Committee and Council Leader, said: "We're keen to increase the number of taxis available locally – helping to support residents, businesses and schools who rely on their vital services.

"Work is taking place to support the trade and encourage potential new operators, including flexibility as regards vehicle ownership and insurance before a licence is granted. If you're interested, please get in touch and find out more."

Never been a fan of a system that will only consider an application if a driver buys and insures a vehicle first.

How many people are going to do that on the off chance of getting an application granted?

Funny one this, and quite apart from the local authority promoting the trade like this.

Thought it was maybe about recruiting drivers for a limited number of HCs, or about private hire rather than HCs, or about increasing HC WAV numbers, but can't see any evidence of any of that on the council's site.

And, ignoring TaxiPoint's take on it, it's also a bit odd that the council's emphasis is on plateholders ('operators', in the Scottish parlance) rather than *drivers* per se. Normally it's the other way round, or it's just 'taxi driving' as a career rather than an emphasis on plating vehicles (which again was maybe why I thought it was more of a WAV thing.)

This looks a bit dodgy, though - why is there a limit of two - illegal, presumably?

Of course, the council does mention that a separate driver's badge is required, but interesting to compare the council's emphasis in the wording to TaxiPoint's take - the former sort of implying that the plateholder may not be a driver, while the latter maybe not got the kind of multi-driver mindset that a lot in the trade elsewhere regard as the norm:

Oh, aye - kind of forgot why I posted the above in the first place - also a bit strange that the emphasis is on HCs if there are no ranks in the council area :-o

And it's not as if it's one of those areas where no-one really needs to bother running a PHV because anyone can have an HC plate with any motor - the last set of stats says the split is about 40% HCs/60% PHVs :?

(Of course, despite the stuff on the website about vehicle 'flexibility' etc, it may be a different story when people actually go forward with applying - 'aye, we're very flexible, as long as it's a brand new WAV EV'

Which in turn is maybe why they're encouraging applications without specifying a vehicle  )

What I can be sure about, though, is that it's DUNbartonshire - it's not the same as the town DUMbarton (only took me living almost 60 years in Scotland to notice that  )
