More than 200 taxis were pulled over during the course of Friday evening. A checkpoint was set up by Preston Police in London Road.

Three drivers were suspended from operating due to their vehicles having defects.

A police spokesperson said: “We started the evening at Preston Train Station before moving on to a check site on London Road with specialist roads policing officers and SDU officers and had roaming patrols across South Ribble.

“Throughout the course of the night over 200 taxis licensed from councils across the country were stopped and inspected by officers, numerous warnings were issued to drivers for having incorrect plates/stickers or not having visible identification.

“We’d like to thank the passengers that we spoke with during these checks, all were appreciative of the multi-agency work to ensure that taxis are safe to be in operation and that the drivers were genuine licence holders.

“To any taxi drivers out there that have ever used the word “you don’t licence me” don’t worry, we may not licence you, but we’ll happily get the relevant taxi licensing authority involved.”

What a strange comment! :-k

Was just looking at that on Facebook, and there's lots of comments. And, unusually, police seem to be responding to a lot of them :-o

Pretty usual (and a tad misleading) stuff about Wolverhampton cars and deregulation etc.

And another unusual aspect is that the NPHTA's Dave Lawrie (I assume it's him, but he's posting with a double-barreled name, and I'm not sure if he's still NPHTA head honcho) is also contributing.

And I think he's misconstrued what someone's saying about 'stopping' Wolves cars working in Preston - he's wittering on about 'stopping' in the context of pulling cars over and what police and LOs can check in cross-border cars, and that sort of thing.

Quite informative, actually, but think he's missed the point a bit (which is about *stopping* cross-border working, by the looks of it).

Anyway, thought about wading in, but then thought the better of it, if only because of Facebook's tragically awful comments system [-(

But this is it, if anyone's interested:

By the way, police linked to one of those advice pages on Preston Council's website (which is a bit more detailed than the usual).

Can't be bothered going through it all, but couldn't help noticing this - what's this 'list of fares' in a vehicle (whether HC or PH)? I'd guess it's some sort of local requirement, assuming the advice is accurate. Maybe a list of fares by mileage?

Private Hire operators are able to set their own fares. They will still have a "meter" but this will usually be a PDA device.

There should be a list of fares on display inside any licensed vehicle. If you do not see one, feel free to ask the driver.

More advice from the council:

Preston Council wrote:
Check that the doors and windows work correctly on the vehicle.

Oh, aye - go round the vehicle opening and shutting the doors. And once in the vehicle, wind all the windows up and down

Ain't gonna happen [-(

And even if it did, an ideal way to start a ruck with the driver :-o

Preston Council wrote:
Never admit if you are travelling or live alone.

Aye, the driver will never work out if someone is travelling alone

And if the drivers are as daft as Preston Council seems to think they are, how will they know if the car is overloaded, or how to work out the correct fare? :-s
