HEADLINE: Fare increase
Plans to increase Hackney carriage fares in Stoke-on-Trent are set to be given the go-ahead by council officials.
If approved by the executive of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, taxis will be able to charge £1.90 for the first 600 yards of any journey before 10pm, with 10 pence for every 130 yards from then on.
Under the current charging system - which started in May 2005 - 10 pence is only added every 136 yards, with the first 600 yards costing £1.80.
Journeys taking place between 10pm and 6am will also be more expensive, costing £2.10 for the first 600 yards, and 20 pence for every subsequent 175 yards. But the cost of keeping a taxi waiting, and the penalty for fouling a vehicle has not been changed.
