A TAXI driver's "bad error of judgment" cost 78-year-old front seat passenger Raymond Warhurst his life.

Azim Khan, 36, was taking the widower and a friend home from bingo when he cut across another car at traffic lights in Gorton, Manchester, last March, a court heard.

Mr Warhurst, of Mellards Court, Levenshulme Road, Gorton, was hurt in the crash and hours later suffered a fatal heart attack.

District judge Alan Berg, sitting at Manchester Magistrates Court, told Khan: "Your driving fell lamentably below the standard expected of a professional driver."

Father-of-three, Khan, from Nelson, who admitted driving without due care and attention - a non-imprisonable offence - was fined £750, banned for two years and told he will have to take a re-test before driving again.

Mr Warhurst had five daughters and a son, Stephen, who said after the case: "All of us are happy that the judge did as much as he could."

How many of us can say hand on heart we have never driven without " due care and attention"?
