HEADLINE: Mayor hails new taxi laws

Belfast needs more taxis to boost public safety and economic development, the city's lord mayor has said.

"Anyone who has tried to hail a taxi in the city centre, even in the middle of the day, knows there is a serious problem," SDLP councillor Pat McCarthy said. He welcomed new legislation allowing private cabbies to pick up fares in the street. He said Belfast had only 400 taxis which could be hailed, compared to "nearly 12,000" in Dublin. "It is time for the taxi industry to move on," he said.
