Glasgow Uber driver sexually assaulted drunk teen in car

https://www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/news/254 ... -teen-car/

An Uber driver who intimately touched a drunk teenage girl in his taxi was locked up today.

Dawitt Tessema, 45, preyed on the 19-year-old in Glasgow's Woodlands on September 15 2023.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that the victim was picked up from Buff Club in the city centre at 2.40am.

The victim was sat behind the passenger seat and was described as "very drunk."

Prosecutor Lauren Sangray told jurors in her closing speech: "Tessema parked outside a street.

"He put his hand through the centre console and tried to touch her on the body and leg, but could not reach.

"He then went in the back of the car and touched her under her pants that were still on.

"The victim could not remember how the incident came to an end."

Jurors heard that the teenager woke up the next day and felt "embarrassed."

The victim told her flatmate about what happened before she made a complaint to Uber.

Before she made the complaint, Tessema texted his victim: "I'm really sorry, please forgive me, please, please."

Tessema, of the city's Carntyne, was then arrested.

He told officers: "I have to stop, I made a big mistake."

First offender Tessema was found guilty of the sexual assault and lowered his head in the dock.

Sentence was deferred pending background reports until next month by Sheriff John McCormick.

He said: "You accepted the trust of a passenger in your vehicle.

"There, you had a 19-year-old female who had drunk alcohol to excess.

"You took advantage of her in the confines of your taxi, which was a gross breach of trust.

"Standing the nature of your conviction, the age and vulnerability of your victim, a custodial sentence is inevitable.

"Your status has changed as you have been convicted of a sexual offence against a 19-year-old female, and accordingly, you will be remanded in custody."

Tessema was put on the sex offenders register.

Surprised councillors even had to vote on this, and that it's even reported in the press.

On the other hand, it always looks like Glasgow doesn't delegate to officials quite as much as other councils. And that the press more inclined to report 'fit and proper' licensing stuff from Glasgow, particularly applications :?

Uber driver loses private hire licence for Glasgow sex attack

https://www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/news/258 ... ex-attack/

An Uber driver who sexually assaulted a teenager after picking her up from the city centre has lost his private hire licence.

Councillors voted to revoke Dawit Tessema’s private hire car licence following a suspension over a serious threat to public safety.

Tessema, 46, assaulted the 19-year-old female in the Woodlands area on September 15, 2023. He was jailed for two years and added to the sex offenders register last week.

Police Scotland lodged a complaint with Glasgow’s licensing section over Tessema’s suitability to continue to hold a private hire car licence on November 4.

His licence was immediately suspended the following day “since it was deemed that his continued private hire car driving would be likely to cause a serious threat to public safety”, according to a licensing report.

Tessema was granted his private hire licence on July 26, 2023 – less than two months before he committed the offence.

The city’s licensing and regulatory committee revoked Tessema’s licence after a statement from Police Scotland following his conviction.

Given that his three-year license will expire while he is in cell block H, it begs the question why the council is spending time on this matter.
