HEADLINE: City rickshaw rides may become a reality
Rickshaw rides could be given the go-ahead to operate at two Aberdeen parks next week.
Councillors will consider an application for a street traders' licence from Fraserburgh-based Pedal Pumpers Ltd to run the pedal-powered public transport at both Duthie and Hazlehead parks.
The licensing committee supported the rides in principal earlier this year, but attached a string of conditions to a licence being granted, including the completion of safety and risk assessments. The matter will again be considered at a meeting on Monday.
Company owner Raymond Apedaile previously planned to run a service to and from the beach but ditched these plans after police and councillors raised concerns about increased traffic congestion. Proposals by the same company to operate along Union Street were also ruled out amid safety and congestion concerns.
Now it only means to operate in Duthie Park and on a pedestrianised access road to Hazlehead Park. The Duthie Park route would start at the Winter Gardens and finish back at the cafe, giving a circular tour of the upper level of the park. The bike-taxi would also operate along Hazlehead Avenue.
Council licensing officers recommend approval of the proposals as long as conditions are met - including that the cab obtains a clean inspection report; that public liability insurance up to £5million is provided; that all drivers meet necessary conditions; and that proper signs are placed in the parks warning of the rickshaw operating.
Edinburgh City Council is the only local authority in Scotland which currently allows rickshaws to operate.
