Drunk beggar exposed himself and racially abused taxi driver

A drunk street beggar staggered past a taxi rank shouting racist abuse at a cabbie and dropping his trousers to expose himself.

The culprit was 51-year-old Robert Hooper, from Dunfermline, who is now behind bars.

He claimed he was trying to catch a taxi after a successful day begging in the streets.

Hooper, of Mackie Place, appeared from custody for a trial at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He was convicted of an offence that on July 14 at Queen Anne Street, he intentionally exposed his genitals to a taxi driver by pulling down his trousers and exposing his penis.

He also shouted, swore and racist and offensive remarks.

The 49-year-old taxi driver was accompanied by a translator when giving evidence.

He said he was sitting in his cab at the rank at around 7pm when Hooper walked past and called him a “P*** b******” putting up his middle finger.

He said Hooper then pulled down his tracksuit bottoms and exposed his penis. “He was holding and shaking it,” he added.

He claimed there were other people in the street next to the bus station, including children.

There were another six or seven taxis behind him in the rank at the time, said the driver.

Another cabbie told the court he heard Hooper shouting “Suck on this” and was “hurling abuse” at the Asian driver.

He said he looked away as Hooper was pulling down his trousers as “it’s not really the sort of thing you want to see”.

Hooper’s version of events was that he was “steaming drunk” after spending the day begging.

He told the court:“ I can remember some bits. I was trying to get a taxi as I’d made £27 that day.

“I’m an alcoholic and that’s why I’m on the streets begging. I drink every day.”

He claimed the taxi driver would not take him as a passenger and he had responded by “being a bit cheeky”.

He admitted sticking up his middle finger and may have called the driver a “P*** b******”.

However, he denied being a racist and said he had not pulled down his trousers.

He failed to convince Sheriff William Gilchrist who found him guilty.

Sentencing was deferred until September 2 for reports and Hooper was remanded in custody.

Haven't seen them for a few years now, but reminds me of the beggars in St Andrews who used to get a taxi home
