Cumberland taxi two-mile tariff could be set at £7

TAXI fares could be harmonised across the Cumberland Council area to a proposed two-mile tariff of £7 if the proposal is approved.

Members of the council’s executive committee are due to meet at Allerdale House in Workington on Wednesday (September 16) to consider the Proposed Cumberland Hackney Carriage Tariff Card report.

It states: “Tariff proposals include the harmonisation across Cumberland to £7, which is below the sample average.

“This would result in a £1, or 17 per cent, increase for journeys in Allerdale and an 80p, or 13 per cent, for those in Copeland. There will be no increase for Carlisle.”

According to the report the Hackney Carriage trade had requested the increase to the tariff card for journeys undertaken within the district and it would be the first opportunity to introduce a single Cumberland-wide tariff card, replacing the differing arrangements inherited from the legacy councils.

It adds: “The increase is sought in response to rising operating costs, including fuel prices, which have increased significantly due in part to international market pressures associated with the Iran-American conflict and wider economic factors.”

Members are recommended to agree the proposed tariff card and its advertisement with any objections received during the statutory consultation period, and not withdrawn, will be reported to the executive for determination.

According to the report Cumberland Council licensing of Hackney Carriages, and all other licences, were combined from the three legacy councils, Allerdale, Carlisle and Copeland on April 1, 2023.

It adds: “Since that time, it has been the intention to combine the tariff card into a Cumberland Tariff card to help the trade and the customers to use the service, that would have one price for the journey across Cumberland.

“The tariff card can only be set for Hackney Carriages as these are vehicles that can ‘rank’ or ‘stand’ and be hired off the street. The tariff is set on a Taximeter that must be used for all journeys within the district of Cumberland.

“Representatives of the Hackney Carriage trade approached the licensing leam seeking an increase to the tariff card.”

I think the council was never going to please everyone, and clearly the 0% increase for Carlisle taxi drivers is not too clever given the current cost of fuel.

I often wonder why enlarged councils think they have to equate taxi fares in one go; why not do it over a number of years?
