HEADLINE: Burglar tried to use a taxi

BYLINE: Anna Hammond South Wales Echo

A brazen burglar tried to use a taxi to ferry him to and from a house he targeted in the city.

The thief caught a cab to the home, asked the driver to keep his meter running and then used the same taxi as a getaway vehicle.

He escaped with a CD system from a house in Fairfield Avenue, Victoria Park, but was ordered out of the cab. Er, can you keep your meter running, mate? I'm just going to break into this house!: A cheeky burglar asked an unsuspecting taxi driver to keep his meter running while he burgled a house in a plush Cardiff suburb.

The confident criminal booked the cab from the sports centre at Sophia Gardens and asked to go to Victoria Park. The driver was asked to wait outside.

But when the fare came out of a house carrying a stereo system, the cabbie became suspicious.

Detective Sergeant Dorian Lloyd said: 'A taxi company received a call at around 3.30pm on Saturday from the National Sports Centre in the name of Singh and two men described as Asian and in their late teens were picked up.

'The bigger of the two men sat in the front passenger seat and the second man, who was wearing a bandana, sat in the back.

'We want to know who these men are.'

The taxi driver was originally asked to go to Victoria Road, but at the junction of Llandaff Road and Penhill, the man wearing the bandana asked him to stop and he got out.

The remaining man said he needed to call at his grandfather's house in Pencisely Road, and asked the driver to wait while he went in.

He returned after 10 minutes asking to go to Fairfield Avenue, Victoria Park.

It was here that he broke into the house by smashing a window.

'He knocked on the front door of the house but didn't get an answer so asked the taxi driver to take him round the back lane and wait,' said DS Lloyd.

'He came back out carrying a black bin liner with a CD system which concerned the driver who by this stage, was getting very suspicious.'

The burglar, who was wearing a dark T-shirt and dark blue tracksuit top, then asked to go to his sister's house in Western Avenue near the China Palace, but changed his mind and said he wanted to go to Ferry Road, in Grangetown.

The driver ordered him out of the cab and called the police about his suspicions.

If you think they know who either of these men are call CID on 029 2057 1542 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
