Post subject:  When is a Hackney Carriage not a Taxi?
.... When its in Great Yarmouth and is Horse Drawn apparently. The Landau - third class Hackney Carriage have just been given :-

1. There own lanes along the seafront which even Taxi's aren't allowed to use.

2. There own Toilet facilities which again Taxi's aren't allowed to use (I mean the drivers not the vehicles before anyone starts :wink: )

3. A fare increase of Pier to Pleasure Beach (1 mile) from £5.00 to £8.00 and a return trip increasing from £10 to £15.00 - the same journey in a Hack would be £3.60 and £5.40!

Also just brought in is that passengers will have to take the front caron the rank (erm haven't we had to do that forever?) and they have to increase their standard of dress; ie. be brought up to the same standard as First Class Hackney Carriage Drivers - ie. Taxi's!

AND they remain with an unlimited pricing scale for any jobs not between their normal points (mentioned above) which means that they can continue to demand £150 for a journey that would cost no more than a tenner in a cab!

When you say third class hackney carriage, do you mean that it is licensed as a hackney carriage.??

Yes they are Licenced as Third Class and bear a green plate:-

1st Class Hackney (ie Taxi) white plate

2nd PH yellow plate

3rd Horse Drawn green plate


The plate reads - Third Class Hackney Carriage

So it can be transferred on to a motor vehicle :wink:

No! It has to remain on a horse drawn carriage! Now whats that old law about horses and bales of hay, candles etc?

Horse-drawn carriages in comeback

Horse-drawn carriages were banned from the West End 70 years ago.
Horse-drawn carriages could make a West End comeback after council leaders announced they would now consider applications for sight-seeing tours.
Westminster City Council has historically opposed them on the grounds of congestion on central London's narrow streets.

But councillors now think they could attract more tourists.

Horse-drawn carriages were first restricted from the West End more than 70 years ago.

Westminster City Council's Danny Chalkley said: "It's a possibility that horse-drawn carriages tours could add to the tourism draw of the West End as long as they are properly regulated and controlled.

"They work in other cities and actually look rather nice, but we'd need to do a lot of research to ensure they could be a positive contribution. It's definitely a debate worth having."

The City of Westminster boasts the largest concentration of visitor attractions in London - with more than 29m tourists visiting the area each year.

But will the drivers need the KOL, and will the carriages meet the turning-circle? :-k
