Resort travel gets new look

BUS, cab, landau... tuk tuk? These crazy machines are set to be be the latest addition to the streets of Blackpool. The tuk tuk could soon be making an appearance throughout the resort after councillors set the wheels in motion.

Making its debut outside the town hall yesterday the "scooter in the shape of a small milkvan" was given a few curious looks by members of the public.

And today the operator of the motorised two and four seater machines said the introduction of the tuk tuk could be an ideal attraction for families wanting to see Blackpool from a very different setting.

Local businessman Robin Ross said: "These machines will help put a smile back on the faces in Blackpool again. "Everywhere you look, people have glum faces. For me, the tuk tuk is the resort's Plan B".

"They have been a massive success in other parts of the country and there should be no reason why they should not be one here. "I have been speaking to licencing bosses at the council and the machines are ready to hit the road now. "There may be a few modifications needed but I am prepared to do what it takes to make the tuk tuk a success."

Tuk tuks originate from the Asian sub-continent and are popular for people wanting to beat the congested roads. They are already in use on the south coast of England and hopes are high that Blackpool could soon be their next destination.

Mr Ross added: "If they are given the go-ahead they will be strictly private hire and not in use at night. "The tuk tuks are aimed at families and not for the stag and hen trade. "It has been given approval by the Department for Trade and Industry and I am hopeful the council will like the idea too."

A spokesman for Blackpool Council said the licensing panel has agreed to the use of tuk tuks in Blackpool so long as the operators make the recommended modifications proposed to them.

These include adding a safety belt to the driver's seat, adding some form of door for both the driver and passengers and general health and safety improvements.

By massive success does he mean the worst ever bus service seen by the VOSA inspectors? :?

"I'm trying to bring a bit of fun into Blackpool. These vehicles have been highly successful on the south coast."

I think too much time and money is being spent fighting tuk tuks.

Once someone is killed in one, and a couple have come close, then they will be finished.
