Disgraced PC set to lose job
By Neil McKay, The Journal
A police officer's career lies in ruins today - even though a court cleared him of racially abusing a taxi driver.
Magistrates convicted PC Chris Brass of being drunk and disorderly after deciding his behaviour after a Christmas works night, where he drank seven pints of beer, was "undisciplined and unruly".
But they dismissed a charge that he racially abused the driver, Adil Sharif.
PC Brass, who was stationed at Corbridge, Northumberland, fell asleep with a half-eaten pizza in the back of Mr Sharif's taxi, which was taking him to his home in Beaufront Avenue, Hexham, from Newcastle.
When he was woken by Mr Sharif, he became abusive, and refused to pay the £45 cab fare, the court was told.
Mr Sharif then drove him to Hexham police station where he swore at his colleague, Sgt Martin Abbott, who was trying to resolve the dispute.
Eventually Sgt Abbott had to arrest the drunken officer.
The sergeant told magistrates in Sunderland yesterday it was the first time he had arrested a police officer in 28 years of service, adding: "To say I am disappointed would be an understatement."
He added: "PC Brass was raising his voice and using bad language, which to my mind was disorderly behaviour.
"His demeanour started to change, his tone became aggressive. He swore at me and I arrested him for being drunk and disorderly."
Brass admitted that he had been drinking, and had visited "three or four pubs" after meeting up with his colleagues in Corbridge and catching a train to Newcastle.
He bought a pizza, hailed a taxi, and took a couple of bites before falling asleep.
He said: "I was woken up on the approach to Hexham and the driver was asking for directions. I saw the meter had the fare at £45, which is why I questioned it. I had never paid that amount before."
He claimed Mr Sharif swore at him, and said: "I wasn't sober, but I was fully aware of what was going on. I hadn't lost my self control.
"If I had been stone cold sober and thought that somebody was ripping me off, I would have protested."
Magistrates decided there was insufficient evidence to show the officer had racially abused Mr Sharif, but that he had been drunk and disorderly.
They gave him a conditional discharge for six months and ordered him to pay £200 costs.
His solicitor, Ronald Mitchell, told the court: "In all probability, he will now lose his job with Northumbria Police."
Brass, who has been suspended on full pay since the incident in December 2005, offered to pay the costs at £10 per week, which was accepted by the court.
