I don't know what to make of this, here we have a gentleman complaining that Nottingham cabbies don't know their way around, yet only a few weeks ago we had the licensing department singing their praises because some of them had passed a Btec which included a knowledge test of some sort, or so I understand? Maybe the gentleman didn't get one of the super-qualified cabbies? _______________________________ Nottingham Evening Post March 23, 2007 Friday HEADLINE: City ambassadors I am sure that someone or some organisation in Nottingham organises "ambassador" awards. Having just returned home from attending the Conservative Spring Forum I would like to nominate the following for awards in helping to promote Nottingham's tourism industry. 1. The coach driver who took us to the outskirts of the city. With his pleasant disposition, helpfulness and humour, he was a credit to the tourism industry. I think his coach belonged to Silverdales. 2. Nottingham police, who looked after us at the conference, ensuring that democracy can take place. They did a superb job. 3. The tram may be a debating point, both at council and public levels. However we as conference delegates enjoyed the facility. I must mention, though, two situations for improvement. Taxi drivers in the city on two occasions had difficulty in finding the West Bridgford Conservative Club. Their knowledge was not up to standard. Perhaps the council's hackney carriage and taxi section can remind taxi firms that conferences are in town. However the most disturbing situation, that needs immediate attention, is the way rail passengers are treated when necessary engineering work requires the closure of the rail service. Quite rightly, passengers are then transferred by coach to their onward destinations. The operation on Sunday was a throwback to the bad old days of the 1960s and '70s when "jobsworth" personnel abounded. With snow and hail in the air, conference delegates, elderly passengers and students were made to queue, because of regulations. The fact is the person in charge was not up to his job. He is certainly not ambassadorial material. Other than that, I had a great time in Nottingham, and an excellent curry to go with it.
