HEADLINE: PEDAL POWER DRIVES BUSINESS

PEDAL power will soon be driving tourists around one of the region's most -visited cities.

Social worker Stephen Murphy, 44, plans to launch .

Mr Murphy, of nearby Brandon, has bought a (GBP) 7,000 machine, which has an electric motor to help him with some of the city's hills and slopes.

He has been given a hackney carriage licence from the city council and plans to transport people within a onemile radius of the city centre.

Pedicabs, common in the Far East, have become popular in cities such as London and Edinburgh, and Mr Murphy hopes that the idea will catch on in the NorthEast.

He will be able to carry up to three people, charging (GBP) 3 for a five -minute ride and (GBP) 8 for a half-hour guided tour.

Mr Murphy thinks it could become a full-time business, and he might recruit other drivers and buy extra machines.

He said: "I enjoy cycling and I like meeting people. I think this service could add to the attractions of the city centre. It is an eco-friendly form of transport.

"I think it could appeal to a variety of people. There are tourists for a start, early evening revellers and students.''

Is Durham now a de-limited manor?

And does that rate exceed the taxi tariff?

And is the driver a fully licensed cab driver?

Around here he could not refuse to drive a passenger to any destination within the licenced area (the whole city).he would also need to pass knowledge test, run a meter get insurance.............etc

What actual law governs rickshaws :? .According to oxford they cannot ply for hire and yet in newcastle they can :-s .I wonder if they will licence my wheelbarrow ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) :lol:

Well each council just makes up their own rules.

May seem daft to some of us, but councils know best according to others [-(

I think the people responsible for passing them should be made to ride one for a week :lol:
