Police seek cars in hunt for cabbie killer

DETECTIVES investigating the murder of a Sheffield taxi who was executed at the wheel of his cab today released images of six vehicles whose owners they want to trace.

The cars were all caught on CCTV in the Scott Road area of Pitsmoor around the time when dad-of-five Younis Khan was gunned down in his cab.

Det Supt Martyn Bates, the detective leading the investigation, wants to assure the vehicle owners they will be treated as potential witnesses and are not regarded as suspects at this stage.

He wants to eliminate them from the enquiry and establish if they saw anything suspicious around the time of the murder at 1.45am on Wednesday March 14.

Det Supt Bates said: "We have established the identity of the car used by the offenders and it is not one of the vehicles in the CCTV images we have released."

He said details of the vehicle used by the offenders would not be released for operational reasons. "The enquiry is progressing well and we are pleased with the way it is going.

"But we are still appealing for witnesses, and I want to assure people who have information, especially about the vehicles captured on CCTV , that they will be treated in confidence," said Det Supt Bates.

Mr Khan, aged 53, was just yards from his home in Abbeyfield Road when he was shot in the chest as he started a night shift.

Officers have made several arrests during the nine-week investigation but no-one has ever been charged with the murder.
