Fire breaks out at taxi garage

A NUMBER of cars went up in flames after fire broke out in the yard of a specialist taxi repair garage last night.

Huge plumes of black smoke could be seen for several miles around after the fire spread to a large quantity of tyres which were stored in the yard. Firefighters were called to the premises on Tawd Street, off Westminster Road, Kirkdale, shortly before 7pm.

Eight taxis were severely damaged by fire after being engulfed by flames.

It is believed the cars were in a scrap condition and were being used for car spares and parts. The fire also spread to an adjoining property, causing damage to window frames.

A total of nine firefighters from Aintree and the city centre used hosereels to bring the blaze under control.

One resident said: "We could see huge plumes of black smoke from some distance away."
