The Evening Standard (London) July 25, 2007 Wednesday ROBOT COMES TO THE RESCUE IN TAXI BOMB ALERT THIS is the moment police explosives experts used a remote-controlled robot on a London taxi at the centre of a bomb scare. The cab caused alarm when it was left in a Kensington street with a large blue plastic container on the back seat. The area was cordoned off at about 1.30pm yesterday amid fears the cab could be packed with explosives in a repeat of the failed bomb attacks in London last month. Police used the robot to remove the windows and get to the blue container. An onlooker said: "No one knew who the driver was. When the police saw it they got very twitchy." The robot allowed officers to inspect the cab and declare it safe. A witness said the cab had been parked in Kensington Gore for about two hours in an area where taxi drivers usually stop for a break. Fellow cab drivers reported it to the police because it looked as if it had been stolen and the back seat was full of newspapers. The witness said: "I heard that it turned out to be a container the driver uses to send stuff home to Jamaica. "He was a bit of a prat to leave it on the back seat. It caused a lot of traffic jams and I saw the driver being interviewed in the back of a police car." A police spokeswoman confirmed that the package was not suspicious. ______________________ |
