Is the flooding down there as bad as it seems on the television news, usually you would expect to see something on here about something like this.

http://www.glos.ac.uk/shareddata/dms/C0 ... C81B1A.pdf

Not exactly strangers to flooding in that part of the world really so why hasn't anyone done anything about it, I notice that the 1607 one may have been a Tsunami,400 years ago exactly, but how long does it take to realise that if a certain area is being flooded constantly work must be done to prevent or contain it.
After the Floods in Paisley in 1994 they immediately set to work, to prevent as far as possible, further flooding.

Is it not interesting though that these things are always without doubt global warming and yet they have been happening for hundreds of years.

Yes it's pretty grim.

We have a couple of regular posters from the areas effected, and I really wish them well. [-o<

When you have an unpresedented amount of rainfall like they have had at the moment, I doubt that any flood defence would cope. Tewkesbury sits between 2 of the biggest rivers in the country and is virtually surrounded by hills. It doesn't take a genius to work out that sooner or later something like this will happen.
As for global warming, thousands of years ago Britain was a tropical place. We then had an ice age. In my opinion we are still emerging from this ice age. It takes thousands of years. I doubt that any of us will be around by the time we return to the next ice age. Maybe we are accelerating the effects but I realy don't think we can change nature that much.

i'd agree with grandad, there is obvious evidence of a 'yo-yo' hot to cold and back again in this part of europe. i think we are on the back end of an iceage and still warming up.

but that wont stop the idiots building on flood plains will it?

It is not that these things have always happened. It is the frequency with which they are now happening. In the past, this sort of flooding would have happened every hundred years or so. Would anyone care to bet it wont happen again much sooner, or more severely?
Does anyone really believe it's coincidence that 8 out of the 10 warmest years since 1900 have occured in the last 10 years?
Sea levels are rising. Polar icecaps are melting.
The planet is getting warmer. This is a fact and not really in dispute.
That in itself is not unusual. It has been warmer in the past. It's the rate of warming that is alarming.
Previous warming/cooling cycles have taken place over many thousands of years. No one should be able to notice the difference in their own lifetime. The planet has increased in average temperature more in the last 50 years than in the 5000 years before that!
In the past the warming has peaked and then started to cool.
Nobody is sure when it will happen this time, or if it will peak at all.
CO2 levels in the atmosphere are higher now than at any time in the last few million years. Some scientists believe we are approaching a "critical level" at which point the warming will become accelerated and irreversable. Others believe we may already have past this point.

The bottom line is: Get used to it. Freak weather conditions will become more frequent and more severe. As surely as night follows day.

I stand corrected. 9 out of 10.
They are, in order:
1998, 2005, 2003, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2001, 1997, 1999,
The other one is 1995, with 2000 next followed by 1990.
Remember these are global figures, and may not reflect local conditions.

Where does 1976 come on the list? I remember that it was very hot in England in that year. what exactly do the figures on the table mean? There is not a lot of explanation is there. Looks like boll*cks to me.

Where does it say what these figures mean???????? There is no information to explain what they are. It just looks like something that someone has knocked up using a spreadsheet. Not at all proffesional looking. Did you do it yourself?

No, the information is from Climatic Research Unit

But there was 1947,one of the worst years ever, then in 1953 there was the storm that killed 300+ people around the east coast? 1500 died in Holland, one period of warmer weather over 10-15 years out of thousands surely does not make conclusive evidence of global warming surely, and if it does why has nothing been done.
The point I was making is that it is not that unusual to have extreme weather in the UK and if it is Global warming etc why is nothing being done to prepare for these events and why do they want to build millions of new homes across the UK,wont that just add to the problem when even more of the natural flood plains are built on.
