Drivers win exemption

Private hire taxi drivers will not have to sit a knowledge test, following a decision from Malvern Hills District Council. The council introduced tests on local knowledge and directions in May after Malvern firms complained about the influx of Worcester drivers taking their business and getting lost.

It applied to all new drivers and those renewing their licence after three years. But private hire firms complained about the ruling, stating their journeys are arranged well in advance, giving drivers plenty of time to plan routes.

At a meeting of the council's executive committee, members voted unanimously to drop the test for private hire firms, though it will still apply to local authority-owned hackney taxi drivers. Complaints from customers will also result in drivers having to take the test.

Steve Box, of Fruitlands-based Steve's Cabs, is among those celebrating the decision: "I'm very pleased with this result, our journeys are pre-booked and most are long-haul to the airports, so it's not really necessary for us."

The council will also introduce private hire licences to replace existing dual driving licences, which enable drivers to work for hackney or private firms. The new licence will be issued on expiry of the existing ones.

So his firm is the only one in the world where the operators never give a wrong address, the punters never give a wrong destination, the punters never change their minds, the punters always know exactly where they are going and the firm is never ever busy. :^o

So the local authority owns the drivers? #-o

I know we often talk about drivers being treated like serfs, but this is getting ridiculous. :lol:

I doubt he will, as all he wants to do is to sit in his office counting all his money. :sad:

I mean why should he give a dam about his existing drivers if all of a sudden he can get any old riff raff licensed? [-(

Methinks he is now favourite for the NPHA 'Operator of the Year'. :sad:

It is not conducive for certain people to have higher quality driver standards in respect of knowledge tests etc. Especially if there is a strict failure rate. Private hire operators who run multiple vehicles on a radio circuit fit into that category and so do those who don't drive their own hackney carriage.

I notice Sussex posted a link to a Manchester article which implied the Manchester knowledge test is difficult. In fact it should be a lot harder because it is not as difficult as the person makes it out to be.

It was only a few years back that we didn't have any knowlegde for the taxis and no meter either.
Bit like the wild west.

Aint much better now.

It is not the dark Ages Sussex , it is the future . having the luxury of having seen this all before Many years ago I fully expect that a system like Delta will spring up in many more areas. and all the conditions will eventually be wiped away . :oops:

It's because of two-bob conditions that has led to the problems in your manor.

I'm glad that in many areas standards are kept high for both sides of the trade.

Lax standards means loads of money for operators, and not loads for the drivers. As you well know. :wink:
