Birmingham Post August 7, 2007, Tuesday Man, 80, dies in 4am collision; A man was killed in a collision with a car in Birmingham despite the desperate efforts of an AA patrol man to save him. The pedestrian, believed to be in his 80s, was knocked down on the A45 Coventry Road, near The Clock pub, at 4am yesterday. A passing car rescue man saw the accident and stopped to give first aid until paramedics arrived. The victim was put in an ambulance where medics continued to try to resuscitate him, but he died during the journey and was pronounced dead at Heartlands Hospital. Police closed the stretch of the A45 Coventry Road at its junction with Catherine-de-Barnes Lane while they investigated. The accident happened on the carriageway heading into Birmingham, close to the airport island. The car was believed to be a black Passat being used as a private hire taxi. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The crews want to thank the AA patrol man for his help." Police are appealing for witnesses to call 0845 113 5000. ______________________ |
