Post subject:  Cabbies are just casual labour

Here's a classic post from a new numpty on the sewing bee.

Nprmally just a casual observer but this latest turn of events has me on the edge of my keyboard.

It's just so full of intrigue, consider these points if you will

Did Gordon Mcdonald think no one would recognise him in the court?

When he made his application in his mothers name and used her address did he think no one would check?

Why, when he was suspended did he immediately phone Jim Taylor?

Why, after this phone call did Taylor go apes**t on TDO accusing everyone else of bad deeds and issueing threats to all and sundry?

I suspect this guy McDonald is a very important cog in Thomson and Taylors wheel of misfortune, he's obviously contributing much to their campaign

It seems to me City cabs are well rid of this guy keeping in mind even as a driver he has access to secure parts of the City website and if he is as close to Taylor as he looks then this could well be a problem for the company.

It's a very interesting development indeed, they say the Enemy within is the most dangerous foe, this could very well apply to this situation.

Something else just occured, wouldn't it be good if during his appearance in front of the City Committee he came clean and made amends by informing them of the whole thomson taylor setup and exactly what and who are behind this whole sorry saga.

Hardly likely I hear you say but its never too late to do the right thing, is it?

This proves that taxi drivers are just casual labour.

They have no rights.

They can be used, charged whatever high rental an owner dictates, aided and abetted by the artificial shortage of licences and an increasing labour pool.

They can be discarded on a whim, with no regard for their family dependencies, financial obligations or their service record.

Drivers have no employment rights to protect them, nor any contract rights either.

The guy who posted this is clearly living in his own fantasy land. But the episode does show that the current status of drivers is a disgrace. It's a political outrage.

This wouldn't be allowed to persist in any other employment sector. Even the gangmasters of the cockle-pickers were reined in.

Yet, this is the 21st century and such practices still happen in the taxi trade. A trade which is operated on the same plane as the mill owner mentality of the 19th century.

That's why every driver in our trade deserves the right to operate his own taxi. To emancipate him or her from the evil clutches of the bad owners who care little for human decency in the pursuit of their own profit.

Isn't it a pity that politicians, because they're working their own interests, refuse to take this argument on board, forcing the matter to be decided in the courts.

Reminds me of a post I saw on an international forum a few years ago; in some US city drivers had to queue up in a taxi depot until a car came in and they could get a drive.

The poster saw this as a sign of a successful industry, but it reminded me of Brando in On The Waterfront.

A lad applies for a plate in the same way as every other person in the UK can, and gets chucked off a radio circuit for it.

As a form of propaganda, those fighting for the end of quotas couldn't have wished for anything more.

Still I look forward to the committee of said firm answering for it.

TBH it just confirms what I have always believed, that the very worst people to run taxi firms are taxi drivers.

They're not going to answer it. Because they can't.
