Post subject:  North Lincs want tariff change.

Taxi drivers in North Lincolnshire want to increase the hours they can charge passengers a higher fare rate.

Licensing watchdogs will meet tomorrow to decide whether the hours of implementation of 'tariff two' can be extended.

At present cabbies are allowed to charge the increased rate of £4.11 for a mile trip from 10pm until 6am. But the 180-strong North Lincolnshire Taxi and Private Hire Association wants it changed to 9pm until 7am.

Association secretary Devlyn Pugh has told the licensing committee: "We would like to apply to increase this tariff in time only.

"We feel this would be more beneficial to the trade as there would be no extra cost to us regarding having our meters changed and also no great increase to the public.

"The trade would like to implement this as soon as possible."

Taxi driver Tahr Mehmood (39), of C Taxi, Goldcrest Close, Scunthorpe, said he believed the time should be extended for tariff two.

"We want it to be extended but the problem now is there are too many taxis on the roads."

Councillors tomorrow will be told taxi fares in North Lincolnshire are above the national average.

Susan Smethurst (52), who runs Early Bird Taxis, on Merlin Road, said she thought they cost too much already and should not go any higher.

"It's fine as it is because people don't want to pay it anyway because they think the prices are too expensive," she said.

"Personally, I think we are okay as we are."

And she said she did not want to change her meter again because it cost her £25 each time, plus the cost of travelling to Grimsby.

Taxi fares for tariff two in Grimsby, Hull and West Lindsey are also lower than in North Lincolnshire.
